CSAAWU South Africa: Plea for assistance

From the comrades of the Zabalaza Anarchist Communist Front

Quote:
Help keep CSAAWU's doors open – An injury to one is an injury to all!
We are writing to you out of solidarity for CSAAWU, a union based amongst farmworkers in South Africa with which we have relations. In 2012/3 South African farmworkers rebelled against the deplorable conditions in the sector – for which hundreds were dismissed and victimized. CSAAWU is one of the few unions that organises in this difficult and under-represented industry. In the aftermath of the rebellion it took a decision to take up the struggle, including by defending close to 100 workers in the labour court.

Just posted on the CSAAWU FP page:

Dear CSAAWU comrades..... The U.S. based Workers Solidarity Alliance (WSA) sends you our warm and heartfelt greetings and solidarity. There's an old U.S. union saying: "Don't let the bastards grind you down!"....Amandla! Forward to victory!

Some comrades have asked me, what exactly is CSAAWU and why, as syndicalists support them?

Although the CSAAW is not a syndicalist union, they have been waging
a hard fought fight to organize South African farm workers. They have been waging this fight from the bottom up. They organize similarly to that of many syndcalists, although not entirely, but on a number of fundamental points close enough.

In the CSAAWU own words:

Quote:
Our Union Policy
 No union official to earn more than a skilled worker
 All union leaders are subject to recall
 Union structures under the discipline of members
 Members respect union policy
-Collective decision making and consultation
- Mandate of members being carried out
- No secret meetings with the bosses without the knowledge of workers
- No changing mandate of members without their knowledge
- Negotiations are not the responsibility of individuals but the collective responsibility of the entire union leadership
- A wage conference before wage negotiations
- Shop Stewards to have a minimum of one meeting a month with members
- Grievances of members must be brought to management/farmers attention no later than 48 hours after they have been reported to the union
- Shop Stewards to have monthly meetings with management to address shop floor issues
- Continued deepening of workers democracy through experience
- Officials will not be paid overtime as the union is still developing a mass base
- Fundraising should be done by all CSAAWU members

Given the global oppression of farm workers in general, and South African farm workers in particular, supporting CSAAWU will help to bring militant and combative unionism to this specifically oppressed group of workers. A unionism that is close to many of my FB friends own sense of unionism.

If you have a few extra bucks, help the comrades out. http://csaawu.alwaysdata.net/donate/
