Black Flag
Black Flag issue 227 has been on sale now for two weeks. It is the second issue put out by the new editorial collective. Am curious to know what people think.
Really? Is that definitely 227 or are you thinking of the bookfair edition? Cos we ran a lot less in the new one.
hmm, not sure actually. it's the one people were selling at May Day.
don't get me wrong, it was well-written and designed, i just like the mags i read to be a good 90% current stuff because that's what gets me going. perhaps that's Freedom's territory though. i just felt the emphasis was off.
Ah yeah that'd be the one then. Given that the first issue was 90% history I thought we'd done quite well
.
At the moment we're limited by what's getting written for it. More writers = more current stuff. The plan is as we go along and pick up a good reputation as a solid and thoughtful magazine the history mostly drops off - though admittedly, a couple of the collective do like their history pieces and interesting rare stuff is likely to be included in future, that's part of the remit I suppose.
The one on sale at the May Day Rally was 226, which was rather historical. Issue 227, which is the latest, first hit the streets on May 2, at the City Hall demo in London; and was then on sale at the Belfast Bookfair and then on the '1968 and all that' bookfair and conference. It is currently available in Housmans and Freedom bookshop. The majority of the current one is mainly up to date stuff. For example: The BNP; Poverty in Manchester; Credit Crunch; LCAP; Interview with RAG; France & Russia today. There is of course a couple of historical articles; Part 2 of a serialised article on the Russian Revolution; a piece on Mary Wollstoncraft; and an Argentine anarcha feminist group from 1896.
Saii, we posted simultaneously then!
I really liked it.
Full-bleed worked much better. Still pixellation problems with the pictures though.
The Black Flag Collective is currently working on issue 228. Just in case anyone missed it I re-post Anarcho's original post.
I would just to like reiterate the call for contributions for the next issue. The deadline is in mid-August, but please contact us to you are planning to contribute material. We are specifically looking for someone to write about the health sector, discussing anarchist ideas on the state of the NHS and the demands in America for a state run system instead of their quasi-privatised system. Specifically, what do anarchists do in the short run with regards to New Labour plans on the NHS (which seem to be privatisation by stealth) and the obvious limitations in the American system (as prompted, in part, by "Sicko"). Something beyond "We need a revolution", in other words.
Also, we need articles which analysis current struggles and events. As a bi-annual magazine, we need more than just reporting.
Obviously, we are looking for work in the class struggle anarchist tradition but we will consider libertarian Marxist material as well. As long as it is interesting and makes valid points, it will be given a hearing.
And of course, issue 227 is still available.

a bit heavy on the history IMHO.
