Newcastle upon Tyne Public Meeting on Education Strikes from West Virginia and Kenya to the UK

Submitted by Cleishbotham on March 24, 2018

Hosted by the Communist Workers' Organisation

New Class Composition? New Struggle?

The bourgeoisie has stripped of its halo every occupation hitherto honoured and looked up to with reverent awe. It has converted the physician, the lawyer, the priest, the poet, the man of science, into its paid wage labourers.

The Communist Manifesto

“Unprecedented” is the extent of the strike so far by University lecturers in the UK, just as was the strike of junior doctors last year. The proletarianisation of the professions in the era of global finance capitalism has created a new class composition. New forms of organisation and solidarity across different sections (see the UK-based students supporting their lecturers in occupations and on picket lines) are also in the air and some are even questioning the viability of the system. Passing phase or pointer to the future? Come share experiences and discuss the significance of the latest strikes.
