Watched this last night after we happened across it in the video store. Man it was shite, is that really what porn was like the in 70s? Someone said its meant to be "arty" but thats hardly an excuse.
Anyone seen it? I thought it was total shite. Half the time it looks like she could just be asleep on a boat (ok bad example), or doing 1000 other things which my resemble giving head. Yeah i read about that after i watched it.... was pretty strange.. can't say i noticed any bruises in the movie... but i mean you see so little flesh anyway in the film its no surprise.

It was the first really big budget porn production, which crossed over into the mainstream. They were a series of civil liberty court cases, when some anti-pornographers tried to ban it. Linda Lovelace did spend a period of her life denoucing her ex-husband and the porn industry. But she is now back in the business and dosen't talk about them days anymore. Make of that what you will. I heard that she felt she was used by the feminist movement, but i haven't come across anything where she's stated that (not that i've been looking mine you). I've never seen the movie, but it certainly signaled a change in america's culture at the time. Permissiveness had won.

linda 'lovelace' never got back in the business, she was anti porn til the end. she raised a couple of kids and wrote some books, i think. as far as ive seen, she never accused radical feminists of using her at all. however pro porn campaigners have suggested that.

I didn't know she had died. I'm pretty sure she did have a connection with the industry (a leg mag I think) around 2000. I think she was also featured in Channel 4's (?) Porn series, showing her at a porn convention, i could be wrong. I assume if she did re-enter the industry it simply financial, she was in very poor health and needed expensive medication. She certainly had a lot of shit thrown at her throughout her life. Must check facts in future and not rely on appalling memory

there is no real difference between erotica or porn except the extent to which you believe its acceptable. its kind of hypocritical to say porn is wrong but erotica ok.
i'm all for watching sex less and doing it more but unfortunately its not always as simple as that.
porn is infinately more fun than Dworkin. (tbh, sneezing is more fun than Dworkin). maybe its because my mum read early porno stuff and then left it for me to read, but i've never understood why people spend so much energy getting pissed off over porn.
I agree its often quite shit, boring and can be exploitative but then so can almost anything. lots of types of work for example. and before anyone says it, its not just a "women as oppressed" issue (i don't actually think women working in the porn industry are necessarily oppressed compared to women doing homework, sewing for shit money 24/7)
where i don't like porn is where the power relationship is entirely unequal.
kids can't choose. for some teenage men and women or older men and women vulnerable because of other circumstances caught in hideously extreme unequal and abusive power relationships its shit and all their choices are hard choices but i do think that is the minority in the mainstream porn industry.
those extremities of unequal power relationships are the point where i care about porn. otherwise the porn industry is just another facet of capitalism and no better or worse than any other business.

has anyone ever seen good porn?? this isnt a theoretical attack on porn, i really want to know. i think ive been disadvantaged cos the first porn viewing attempt of mine was kind of enforced when i was drunk and my mate decided to show me the 3 most misogynistic bits of porn hed ever found. including crackwhore confessions, pretty horrible; scat porn, just dont do it boys and girls; and this incredibly depressing japanese grossness where 6 guys humiliated a girl in every possible way in a sewer then made her crawl along with tapeworms on her head. its put me off a bit, but im hoping this is just kinda extreme sickness and that the tapeworm thing is limited to japan....

I find it dull and mechanical and pretty much just unsexy. Some sexual images are really beautiful and sensual and arousing, but porn seems tacky and degrading. Just doesn't do it for me.

But perhaps the reasons it's politically bad are the same reasons it's shite, boring and uniteresting - it portrays alienated sex in unequal relationships, which is both oppressive (politically bad) and tedious (shite, boring, uniteresting). I think the erotica/ porn distinction is useful because it shows that you can be anti-porn for feminist reasons without being a prude. I think a lot of libertarians like describing themselves as not being anti-porn for shock value and because it pisses off puritans and liberal feminists. Not bad things in themselves, but there is a danger of being soft one of patriarchy's nastier expressions as a consequence. Bascially, I agree with Jess.

i really would like someone to explain the difference between porn and erotica to me it just seems a handy way of justifying what u wank to whilst still being able to pass judgement on other peoples. For example i've seem girls tied up and spanked and then fucked up the arse in black and white and it was apparently "erotica" whilst i've seen some shit couples porn (u know the boring shite were they got thru a few standard positions and fake being into it ) why is one more oppressive than the other?

apparently bruises are clearly visible on her body in the movie. like i said, i havent seen it.
