Well I was in Borders a couple of days ago, and Banksy appears to be top of the bestsellers list, which I think is really cool. What do other people think about it? I think it's a shame his work has become such a commodity, but it is fucking good so it was something to expect really!

Banksy's stuff doesn't really work out of context IMO. And charging people (20 bastard quid) to look at pretty pictures of it is intolerable, banksy thou hast sold out.

So you don't think he should be able to make any money from having a skill?

Using that logic you're against all forms of professional art, plumbers, carpenters. musicians etc.?

I do think 20 quid is a lot though, but I doubt he set the price...

Have you seen the letter from a "Hackney resident" in his latest book, where some geezer is complaining about gentrification, and blaming Banksy for making an area trendy with his art work?

Pure class! (literally!)

I don't really think you can blame Banksy for gentrification. I mean, the Nathan Barley types are hardly likely to get him, and I doubt he considers them to be on a level with him.

I went to a Banksy exhibition in Notting Hill a couple of months ago which involved looking at classic Turner-esque landscape paintings with ugly urban additions (ie shopping trolleys in the nice river, a fat England fan etc) while live rats scurried around your feet.

I think it's about more than that though, there's an integrity issue too. I'm not saying that Banksy's a sellout but to look at things in such crude terms would be over-simplistic.

You're an idiot. He's an amazing artist. By far the best British artist right now.

<spits whisky over monitor>

Come on! he's an ok grafitti artist, with the audacity providing much of the impact, and a witty line in gimmicks. Nothing more.

So what the guy who made a shed into a boat's better?

Though I spose I said that for impact really. I'm no art critic, I don't "get" most of it really, so nyeh. He's probably my favourite British artist anyway, though don't like him as much as I used to.

come on john banksy's graffiti is now a fucking cliche, a parody of a detournement. It has been completelty detourned itself. Of course we could have forgiven him that if his work had anything close to a subversive edge, but because of it's straight one dimensionalism and lack of subtlety or self awareness it is unable to maintain even a smirk of subversiveness.

Jack, the fact that you like The Pogues shows you have no taste in any kind of art whatsoever.

Tracy Emin is shit. And it's not fair you're allowed to be homophobic just cos you're a homosexual.
