Black Panther Hot Sauce

OAKLAND, Calif. -- Former Black Panthers are hoping the phrase "Burn Baby Burn" will help their nonprofit organization market a new product--hot sauce.
The Huey P. Newton Foundation, named for the co-founder of the 1960s militant group, is seeking to trademark the phrase that for many brings to mind the racially charged 1965 Watts Riots in Los Angeles that left more than 30 people dead, at least 1,000 wounded and hundreds of buildings in ashes.
The new line of hot sauce, called "Burn Baby Burn: A Taste of the Sixties Revolutionary Hot Sauce," is aimed at "anyone who wants to have an extra savory boost to their food," executive director and original Black Panther David Hilliard said in an interview.
"The hot sauce is another way to raise money and bring attention to the Huey Newton Foundation," Hilliard said. "We're trying to turn the tide of violence and educate young people through our work."
The foundation's hot sauce plans were first reported by The Smoking Gun, a Web site that posts court documents, usually involving celebrities.
The foundation also plans to produce its own salsa, as well as a clothing line called "Spirit of the Sixties."
Hilliard said the group hopes to start selling the spicy condiment later this year to commemorate the 40th anniversary of the 1966 founding of the Black Panther Party.
presumably its to give people time to stock up enough of the sauce for the commemorative banquets. i think it's a pretty awesome idea. doesn't one of the other ex-panthers have a website with all his bbq recipes on?
Alright !!! That is great news. I remember in the early ’80s I was in a company vehicle listening to Bobby Seale (http://www.bobbyseale.com/) being interviewed on a local AM radio talk show. I can still remember his voice when he was talking about what kind of grill to buy. Smoove even heat, adjustable grill with a heenged lid. Amen brother. It’s good to hear the Black Panthers are doing well and in to cooking. Heh.
Comment on the awesome hotsauceblog.com
On the one hand this obviously a sad sad end to the BPP legacy, radical chic, recuperation blah de blah.
But on the other, it's a fantastic idea and I want some.

Yeah, that's Dave Hillard, quoted above. Looks like he's swapped radical politics for building a celebrity chef empire. Also, the Writers and Readers book on the BPP says that he was kicked out of the BPP by Huey after a kicking, so a strange person to be holding up hte HPN legacy...

good to see that that plan's going well then, it's remarkably similar to my retirement plans...
French Revolution Mustard?
FFS, what's wrong with the USA. Can you imagine anyone launching a Brigate Rosa pasta sauce sometimes soon?
Or an Angry Brigade curry?
Or an ALF vegan sandwich spread?
Combat18 Brown Sauce?
AFed Mayonnaise.
Or an ALF vegan sandwich spread?
hmmm....
The film last night was good (The Black Panthers). Also the name was actually the Black Panther Self-Defence Party (an important point). (Which, incidentally, was also where the IRA arose from in the seventies and eighties, especially following Bloody Sunday and the killing of Sean Downs at the Civil Right March in Derry.
And where we might make a start?
i was aiming for the durruti gazpacho...
God, is this actually true? What, is the whole black power situation all nice and rapped up so that they can settle down and make hot bbq style sauces? Fuck no!
Whatever happened to the Black Panthers?
The got old and jaded. Now it is up to Refused and wheresmyshoes to save this dying breed. Lord save us all.

The FBI shot most of them in their beds.

A lot of the rest were fucked by hard drugs.
Plus the decay of the black urban industrial working class due to outsourcing of factories to SE Asia/Mexico and massive growth in poverty, drug dealing and addiction.
As far as I can tell, most of the prominent Panthers who are still around are active politically: Bobby Seale, Kathleen Cleaver, Geronimo Ji Jaga, Angela Davis, Robert King Wilkerson, Lorenzo Komboa Ervin, Ashanti Alston...even Afeni Shakur (Tupac's mother) could be considered an activist of sorts.
Mumia Abu-Jamal and H. Rap Brown are in jail; Assata Shakur is still in exile.
Bobby Rush, granted, is now a member of Congress. But his is probably a case of selling out, rather than burning out

Oh yeah, that rings bells. I've been reading up a lot on the Black movement in the US but haven't touched much on the Panthers. One guy I am aware of however is Ashanti Alston, who as you probably know (
) is now a pretty good anarchist. He still seems to like "Nationalism" which can be confusing but he seems to mean more of a community-spirit and solidarity...which I can understand.
OK, so who originally said 'It is better to die on your feet than live on your knees' And (2-part question), who said it during the Spanish Civil War, and (3-part question), where is there a statue of the latter person in a well-known radical Scottish City.
As ever, coconuts for prizes.
(Do you realise that 160 people per year are killed by coconuts falling on their heads - true, but don't know who compiles the stats)
I love this board.

PS Also, were you aware that one of the strategies to subvert the Black Panther defense Party was to flood the ghetto with cheap drugs to pacify the inhabitants (in league with the mob).
Whatever happened to the Black Panthers?
Don't quote me on this, i think some went on to form the BLA (Black Liberation Army), armed insurrectionist's. I think (just waiting for confirmation) Jerome White-Bey, was a previous BLA member, he was/is secretary of the Missouri prison labour union www.mplu-support.tk , the secretaryship swaps hands quite regularly, as they're chucked into the hole, an come back out.
Check out the brighton abc website at http://www.brightonabc.org.uk/restoftheworld.htm also the PPWC (Political Prisoners of War Coalition) there's a link from the BABC links page, although that's not working.
Lorenzo Komboa Ervin is also now an anarchist and has some really good analysis of the Party and the relevance of anarchism to the Black struggle:
cheers
|The answers btw:
1. Zapata
2. Dolores Ibarrura (la Passionara)
3. Glasgow (Broomielaw on the Clyde)
No killer coconuts distributed tonight.
I knew the first one 8)
Not fucking good enough. Where is the political education I received as a communist cadre, which was not only theoretical but also practical? Trudging round estates with leaflets. Seriously if we are to make progress, this is required. Take the message to the people where they are, on the streets.;We also had people in the armed forces and the police. I doubt you would countenance (good word) that?
Also, do read the good press every day - I would recommend The Independent and the Herald for Scottish readers. This is CP practice and we were pretty well organised, so take heed. Love always my friends.
Joe

Would that not be 2006?
