Someone mentioned Bill Gate's attack on free ("open source"*) software as communist in the bittorrent thread. I thought I'd share some links on free software that'll be of interest to anarchists.

Definition of free software (this is a bit dry)

A Speech on Sharing by Richard Stallman (nice friendly intro to fs)

"Anarchism Triumphant Free Software and the Death of Copyright" by Eben Moglen

*it's better to say free (as in speech) software than open source, the free software movement regards sharing as a right while the open source argument is that it just makes better software.

I think that one was off the register wasn't it? thats a good place to check, and slashdot is pretty good too even if I can never be bothered to read it.

warez sites are a bit dodgy though, most of them have shite porn pop ups or dont actually have what you want to download and/or give you spyware riddled software.

I've used this one myself and it was fine for most of the programs. One had a virus but my anti-virus picked it up and since the program has been removed.

Ah but that software's free as in beer not as in speech. I use lots of non-free software, but I'd rather not... like all the music I've made for a year or more is stored in Cubase SX's proprietary format. So basically Steinberg control my music. That sucks ass.

Need to give rosegarden a try...
