'Nine Lives of Nestor Makhno'; film; Ukraine/Russia
I just found out the Ukranians and Russians are currently filming a new 12-part film about the life of Nestor Makhno from the age of 8 till his death in Paris. It's due out in Spring 2006. I was so excited about the news I stayed up till 5am (& was late to work the next day) to translate 2 articles about the film from the Kiev papers:
http://www.freedombin.com/trans/
here's an exerpt from the 2nd article:
"Mukola (Nikolai) Kaptan sees the main character of his film like this:
"Movies of the totalitarian era fulfilled not only a 'sozc-zakaz'[social orders], but also a very mighty ideological function. But for "ideologies" Makhno is a very inconvenient person...
I personally see Makhno's anarchism as the "theory of minor[local] motherland." In it, the main value for a human being is the fact that he lives in his native village, his native home, he has close friends that he sees on a regular basis, and noone must order them around, tell them when to sow, to whom and what to sell. For such a huge and mighty State as the USSR, such a position was highly dangerous, therefore in the old movies they found an ideal move -- ridicule Makhno, make a characature out of his personality and with this to simplify, to level the main idea for which Makhno gave his life.
But our Makhno strives to be free. Free from State, from money-drive social relations, from the [pre-industrial] natural environment..."
I first heard about this on the forum at makhno.ru
Enjoy!

not in theaters unfortunately.
i really hope the DVD will have sub-titles in English (at least). if not, one might be motivated to make a hacked version with subtitles. this could be a fun one for movie night at your local Social Center or Infoshop.
i believe it's being released by Mosfilm (one of the main ex-Soviet-State Film companies) and RTVi, the Russian international sattelite/cable channel will be showing it.
I can't believe how amazing this looks.
Guns, sex and anarchism! Cool!
I wonder how honest/critical it'll be, though..

I'm impressed by how they managed to hire the same browline, as well.

that's hillarious, yo. being slow, i only noticed it after you pointed it out and it totally made my day.

yeah, i'm wondering the same thing. the actress that's playing Makhno's wife Galina says the following on the subject:
"But seriously, Kaptan is trying to make a truthful motion picture about the famous anarchist, without any sharp [ideological] accents, without blaming or flattering anyone. The main idea is to acknowledge that this happened in [our/ukranian] history and to deliver verifiable facts to future generations. Viewers will decide who was right. We'll be able to view the film approximately 1 year from now. "
i can't wait!!!!

Man I bet that guy getting shot's a bureaucrat
my bet goes on "an impartial humanist".
Great news - but 12 parts!
I wonder how informed modern Ukranians are about Makhno - I read... oh... 15 years ago... that he was largley a forgotten figure and who didn't fit in with the then resurgent Ukranian nationalism.
I heard there was a Nestor Makhno vodka and detergent. And that also there is one man who fought with him still alive.
why's he shooting dumbledore?
Hi

Principles are class enemies.

i think it's a Ukranian/Russian (christian) Orthodox priest. i see the Greek Orthodox priests walking around my neighborhood and they're outfits are similar.
Worth petitioning the BBC to buy the rights and broadcast it with subtitles on BBC Four? (They'll need something to fill the schedules after they've got through all three seasons of Heimat!)

looks more like a priest to me. which means that just from that photo, we know it's at least as good as land and freedom.

How's the book? I was thinking of picking it up on saturday, it'll probably be my only purchase, we're very poor at the moment. Maybe i should start a poll...
the only book i'm buying is the arshinov makhno book. i shall go to the makhno meeting as well
speaking of books, as of today, there're 11 books about or by Makhno in a mainstream Russian web shop:

I thought he was a wizard...
so basically what you're saying is that this film will be a ukrainian cross over of land and freedom and harry potter? if that isn't the best film ever, i don't know what is.

All the ukranians i have met (only about ten) had heard of him and had some idea that he was anarchist or had fought the reds and whites etc. Nearly all of them were under thirty, don't know how common this is, perhaps i just have Maknodar.
Anyone know Ukranians who could tape it for us? If only we were some kind of international Trot grouping with faithful trot-bots in every country. We tried to set up a branch in Ukraine of the Anarcho-Primitivist Tribe but all our money vanished
just found the latest article on the Nine Lives of Nestor Makhno and did a terrible translation of it from Russian to English and posted it here:

Damn. 12 parts - no chance of it being shown in cinemas then?
