Revolutionary Comic Books/Graphic Novels
Anybody know of any interesting comics? Ive been reading V for Vendetta lately and now im obsessed with political comics.
Anybody know of any interesting comics?
There's a decent one about palestine, on my shelf, by Joe Sacco, i think the title might be Palestine.
There's plenty of zines out there, try looking for Simon Gain, for anarcho punk style. Anti-state tortoise, Rocks!
Not nessecarily "revolutionary", but damn interesting:
Anything by Joe Sacco - amazon link. Esp. his Palestine stuff, but all his other stuff is amazing as well (mostly on Bosnia).
And the two 'Perseopolis' comics by Marjane Satrapi are fascinating (about a girl growing up and experiencing Iranian Revolution etc.): amazon link
Oh and obviously Art Spigelman's 'Maus' - amazon link
I'd be interested in people's recomendations as well!
Hi
"V for Vendetta" is wicked. I thought "Watchmen" had lots of politcal overtones, if you liked V, you'll love Watchmen.
I also found the Halo Jones stuff quite politically interesting (especially given my cornucopia technology fetish, ha ha used the word). Anything involving faster than light travel ususally requires a communist (open market ultra-left communist, that is) economy somewhere.
Don't get me started on the Vulcans, whoops to late. It's no coincidence that the Ferengi were the last planet to achieve warp capability and also the only Capitalist civilsation that have ever done so. Unlike other societies they bribed unscrupulous traders (using half their planet or something) to contravene the Prime Directive and give them warp technology even though they didn’t meet the criteria required (world government, peace, egalitariansm, prosperity).

Have you got them? They sound well interesting!
Hi
I'm going to love this thread, I feel it in my bones.
Judge Dredd, "America". Some of Pat Mill's ABC Warriors on Mars is pretty good too.
"Nemesis the Warlock" for all you Chaos Magick Pagan types.

Hi LR,
I concur. On the comics that is. Halo Jones was ace. Politically interesting stuff touched on there leads onto Ken Macleod's SF - you a fan?
As for political stuff, my other half's brother had a compendium of the Boondocks, which I read over New Year. Really good and really funny. Ageing grandpa moves with his 2 African-American grandsons to a white suburb of Chicago. The elder grandson is a revolutionary black leftist, the younger wants to be a "gangsta". Hilarious.
And for everyday political stuff with a sort of punk rock take on the world, you can do no worse than Love and Rockets, from the same era as LR is writing about.

Martin

HI rkn
Thanks for reminding me that you can get all these things from Amazon, I can heartedly recommend that you consider the following….
And one more, 2000 AD’s homage to CW…
Anti-Justice department terrorists Total War have been a thorn in the sides of the Judges for many years, but when they threaten to nuke the city unless the Judges stand down, a race against time begins for Dredd: he must find the bombers before it's too late.

Hell yes V for Vendetta was badass. I downloaded the whole collection on bittorrent. Hollywood is making a movie off of it, but it seems like they might butcher it. http://vforvendetta.warnerbros.com
Ill be trying to get my hands on Watchmen now
"V for Vendetta" is fucking 8) but i'm certain that Hollywood (if the film ever comes out) will utterly destroy it, just like every other adaptation they've tried to do of any of the great Alan Moore's work...
Moore's "Swamp Thing" (published by DC/Vertigo, who i think also did the trade paperback edition of "V") is also pretty fucking cool if you like intelligent, satirical horror/esoterica stuff with environmentalist undertones, and riffs on "standard" horror concepts like vampires, werewolves, zombies etc used to comment on stuff like gender relations, nuclear power and the US's slave history, while all building into a great big gnostic/Order vs Chaos cosmology type thing...
Grant Morrison is the other big Vertigo author worth checking out, tho he takes the trippy/postmodern stuff a bit further, and obviously did a lot of acid... actually, i'm pretty sure they both did...
"The Invisibles" (which i've only read the first volume of) is probably his most famous work, which covers some very anarchist themes, again woven into a sort of gnostic/higher-consciousness/conspiracy-theory-of-history narrative... King Mob rocks 8) He has also done some ecology/animal-rights themed stuff ("We3", "Animal Man") and some just plain insane stuff ("The Filth", "Doom Patrol")...
Alan Grant also put a character into the Batman comics called "Anarky", who was basically a kid genius anarchist superhero... slightly cheesy and embarrassing, but actually one of my first encounters with the concept of anarchism, so poss worth mentioning... also that story arc introduced me to Darkseid and the New Gods and that whole mythos created by Jack "King" Kirby, which is worth checking out for anyone who likes Star Wars, Greek mythology and mad 60s hippy shit (or who likes a really, really badass, evil supervillain/Lord of Order/total antithesis of life and freedom type character... Darkseid Is
)...
probably plenty of other stuff i can't think of riht now, but will think of later... i'd like to discover more anarchically aligned indie comics tho...
V for Vendetta was originally published in Warrior. If you can find copies, get them. It's also worth reading for Marvelman, which was an update on the 50s Marvelman comic, itself a British adaptation of the cancelled US Captain Mazrvel. There was loads of other good stuff in it - it's where Moore and co really got started.
Check out this link for more on Warrior - http://www.internationalhero.co.uk/w/warriorcomic.htm
Hi
I love your posts knightrose. Would you do another of your "when I was in Solidarity" threads please?
Warm regards

Sorry LR, I think I exhausted that one. Posts like that need wet Saturday afternoons with nothing else to do .... Fortunately they don't occur that often.

oh god.
Oh i just remembered - when i was a a kid my dad gave me the Communist Manifesto in comic book form which was published in the 70s in Mexico... was fucking cool
Hi
Fantastic! I felt myself being converted to Stalinism by this, especially by the "welding wife". Interesting how “Godlessness” was presented as the major threat.
Loved Hegel and the Lederhosen too.
Anyway, lots of love etc.

Watchmen is so fucking amazingly awesome.
One of the best books I've ever read, comic or not.
The Dark Knight Returns also has a political edge and is really good.
