Russia
so, on monday at the vile hour of 6.55 i leave the shores of blighty for 9 months or so, and the first stop is st. petersburg. anyone here been there? any cool historical things i should see that i might not have thought of? and the same goes for moscow and irkutsk. obviously i'll be paying a visit to kronstadt and kropotkin's grave, anything else i should check out?
Have fun dude!
Moscow doesn't have an enormous number of tourist sites, but I went to visit Lenin's Tomb (only open Tues-Thurs btw), the Museum of the Revolution (now called Museum of Contemporary Russian History), wandered round the Kremlin (long queues so its a good idea to get there first thing in the morning), St Basils Cathedral, Red Square (most of the other things are next to it as well).
Also, I got to see a protest of Communist Babushkas, complete with Lenin and Stalin portraits.
In St Petes, the Winter Palace is supposed to be quite impressive (if you can cope with all that aristocractic decadence
), and I think the Aurora is still sat in the port and done up as a museum.
i think i'm a bit late to contact any local anarchos, and i can't find anything that looks like the address of an infopoint or anything... i mostly want to do touristy things this time anyway, i might go back some other time and check them out more seriously, as easter european anarchists are cool as fuck. same goes for the syndicalists (although that's the non-iwa lot, tut tut
), i couldn't work out if they had an office in irkutsk, they seemed to be mostly based in omsk.
and yeah, i've ordered my two day hermitage ticket, cos it's full of art, and i can pretend to storm it. on my own. and i'll probably visit the aurora, it'll be cool. cheers for telling me when lenin's tomb's open, that means i'll have to go tuesday as i'm only in moscow for 2 days, then visiting little towns nearby for 3 days and coming back for another couple of days before getting on the train for 4 days. kind of a weird thing to visit, but would be interesting. how early is early in the morning for russia by the way? because in say spain, 10 is quite early, but judging by the amount of bureaucracy just to get into the country, i assume the russians have to get up earlier just to get through all the paperwork...
hey my mate lives in moscow and is involved in all things anarchist, if you want to hook up with him, send me a PM.
Heva awesome time!
