Films needed on tenants stuggles and housing

FILMS ON TENANTS STRUGGLES, HOUSING

OR WORKING CLASS COMMUNITIES ORGANISING FOR

THEMSELVES NEEDED FOR FORTHCOMING TENANTS

FILM SHOW IN SHOREDITCH.

Hackney Independent are planning a film show in late July which is mainly centred around the tenants movement.

Does anybody have access to the following short films that we can borrow:

Housing Problems (1935)

Not a Penny on the Rates (1968)

Who Cares (1971)

All three of these films are held by the British Film Institute - but they cannot be borrowed or loaned out - nice isn't it that people can't get access to their own history.

There may well be other short films that are out there - for instance, on mining communities organising for themselves during the strike.

Any help would be appreciated, and, of course, you'll all be invited!

Contact Mike Lane in Liverpool -- he and another guy have produced a DVD recently interviewing people in their local estate. His contact details are on a story he recently posted to IMC. PRobably worth inviting him to the gathering as well. http://www.indymedia.org.uk/en/2005/06/313069.html

That sounds cool!

I used to work at the BFI, and they can't loan tapes out but they have mini cinemas which can be privately rented pretty cheap, and could be covered by donation. But not in shoreditch of course...

Very interesting link - I've sent him an email and also informed him about this saturday's community action gathering - an input along those lines would be very valuable

If he can't make it, let me know. I've got a copy of the DVD he sent me and we could watch it at the gathering on someone's computer or something...

Actually, I haven't seen that - do you think that it is relevant?

My main problem with that is that at 77 minutes it is too long - I was thinking more of short films.

Lazlo - I emailed Mike but have yet to receive a reply - is there anyother way I can contact him - although I did only email him two days ago.

Also, is it possible to copy this DVD for me so that I can have a butchers at its content - what's it like?? Does it need an introduction before being shown, or is it self-explanatory?

I've not seen it yet myself, but I'll bring it along on saturday. If you look through enough of Mike's posts on IMC you may find a phone number, otherwise I'll try to dig you out one.

Got a reply off him. Although it's a one to one email, the contents aren't confidential:

Sorry it has took me so long to get back in touch but had work commitments. What is the address to send the DVD to? I don't think I will be able to make it down to London because of work commitments and can't afford the train fare. We are really under the cosh here in Liverpool. The service providers, council officers, agencies, councillors and lets not forget the RSL housing officers are very strong here in Liverpool and they are now abusing the Harassment laws. Many tenants are being taken to court under the harassment and ASBO laws to silence them. I used to put out a newsletter called the Whistle Blower. Over three years I put about 70 issues of it out into the New Deal for communities area where I live.

The NDC area encompasses 4,000 houses. After a couple of years the council and the RSL's along with the police and the community wardens, who are employed by the local RSL, decided to orcorstrate a campaign against me. I was nearly kidnapped or mugged by local criminals and my car was petrol bombed outside my RSL house. I have also had veiled threats that if I carry on posting critical newsletters around the NDC community I will be taken to court under the harassment laws and have an ASBO served on me. These are the latest oppressive tactics that are being used by the oppressive service providers here in Liverpool. The misuse of the Harassment laws are now a common practice by these service providers, who always paint themselves as the victims of their tenants.

Take a look at out web site: www.tenantsactiongroup.pwp.blueyonder.co.uk You can also see a vidio of me speaking on: www.liverpoolcommons.org
