The government shut down about 140 offices of the Korean Government Employees’ Union (KGEU) on September 22, under a law stating that the union must register as a legal entity. The law went into effect in January, but the union had refused to do register itself officially, saying that the law would limit its freedom of assembly and freedom to strike.

Interesting in light of the various discussions on here about registration.

KGEU Breaking News 061010

October 10, 2006

Repression will not stop until KGEU is destroyed.

As of October 10, 2006, in total the local offices of 125 out of 251 KGEU chapters have been forcefully closed down. Of those 5 local offices were closed down even before September 22. The union offices closed are usually sealed off with iron plates or bars welded.
