the days of way back... Direct Action history

Submitted by JDMF on 26 November, 2005 - 13:12.

did a job as a mule trasporting huge bundle of old Direct Action mags from manchester to edinburgh (had a work trip there conveniently) and has a chance to read through some of them on the way in train.

This bundle had almost all issues of Direct Action from late 40's onwards!!! Very interesting read - for instance issue in 68 eight said "class against class in france, revolution one step away" wink

I didn't know this, but apparently the magazine of the british section of IWA has always been called Direct Action, whether it was done under Anarchist Federation of Britain, Syndicalist workers federation, direct action movement, or currently Solidarity Federation.

I liked the tabloid format the best though wink

Edinburgh sol fed comms are planning to scan each and every issue of the old mags, turn them to PDF's and put them online. Will be quite an interesting piece of british anarchist history there.

Aye SolFed has a long history not just from 1994. Two members of Manchester SF were in the Manchester SWF that is the link between the SWF & the DAM.

I gave Edinburgh a lot of old DAM pamphlets that are going to be put up as well and your post has reminded me I found more and promised to post them to Edunburgh!

Yeah, we need to get more up like this so it's more widely available. smile

The tabloid DA of the DAM was dire before it folded, or the last few issues were anyway.

27 November, 2005 - 23:31

There were a few sporadic attemps at keeping the tabloid DA going that weren't up to the previously high standard granted but the tabloid DA was one of the best Anarchist publications of its time. I'd go as far as to say it was better than almost anything about at the moment but maybe it just seems like that now.

We'd love to be able to make stuff like this available in Just Books when it (re-)opens.

Cheers;

When they are in PDF format, we could even bang a CD together with all issues in it, would be cheap enough to produce. Don't know how well such things sell though.

This will take a long time though! First they need to purchase a A3 scanner, and then find the time to go through the whole lot. If i had to guess, i would bet about a year grin

But i guess they will put the issues up as they go along.

greets

have a few old pamphlets which i can scan in and put up on my website. people can then copy then into whatever format they like.

Titles include:

maximoff. "syndicalists in the russian revolution"

"the bomb direct action and the state"

"workers' control"

george foulser "unholy alliance:the 1966 seamens strike: an analysis"

bill christopher "smash the wage freeze"

"strike strategy"(nat rank and file mvmnt)

tom brown "lenin and workers control"

tom brown "the social general strike"

also

"why strikes fail" a 1970's US edn with wrap-around text

william godwin "on law"

herbert read "the education of free men"

george woodcock "railways and society"

"the tragic week in may" (CNT-FAI)

herbert read "Freedom - is it a crime?"

george woodcock "homes or hovels"

let me know if there's any there people would like done first. as the paper is getting very "brown" the OCR software I use may not be able to do a very good job and with RSI I'm not able to re-type the texts, so can't guarantee i'll be able to do them all.

(PM me with requests.)

Alright MalFunction have you seen our library: www.libcom.org/library ?

We're trying to get as much of that kind of stuff as we can, so anything you want to OCR please email it to us!

For me, personally, these sound interesting:

-george foulser "unholy alliance:the 1966 seamens strike: an analysis"

-"why strikes fail" a 1970's US edn with wrap-around text

-"the tragic week in may" (CNT-FAI)

Any short history stuff you have which might be suitable for www.libcom.org/history please send that to us as well!

discovered the souchy text (the tragic week in may) is included in the freedom press book "The May Days Barcelona 1937" published in 1987. so won't be OCR'ing the original - also it's falling apart so have put it back in the filing cabinet for safe keeping

however have done the foulser pamphlet which you should be able to find here:

http://myweb.tiscali.co.uk/blackchip/unholy_alliance.htm

simply copy the text if you want it. (e-mailing may introduce hard formatting)

next up the why strikes fail which is wrapped around the earlier text "The Social General Strike" - if the OCR prog can read it. v. poor print quality!

this and other Tom brown texts can also be found in the Phoenix Press volume "Tom Brown's Syndicalism" published in 1990. No idea if copies are still available.
