i think a bit of duplication would be ok...

yeah it's only headlines in the side bar

but yeah it also shows there aren't many people posting news...

or it shows that users are posting news, it's not being done by anonymous site admins ...

ok so to make that right block.

clone the news latest feed.

take image and introduction out of fields.

untick "page" and remove the url entry.

in the block section, check the header is alright (block title as link), then make it 10 items per page.

Then go to block admin - enabled the cached version of the block. Set it to 86400 time and to update when a node is added, to show only on news, and in the right sidebar.

Then we might have to play with theme css to make the list look a bit better.

nice work, news is looking good. might be good to call the right-column block 'latest headlines' though, to distinguish it from the main latest news block

yeah that's sensible.

instructions wink

admin >> build >> views >> news_list_long

find the block >> header bit. edit it to that text.

done - does it not update straight away because it's cached?

yep. If you want to force update of a cached block to check a change, you can go to block admin, find the cached version, configure, save without changing anything, and it'll clear the cache.

ok I've redone the random sectors block. Works basically the same but code is a lot cleaner, so it'll be easier to re-use for similar blocks elsewhere.

Can we have more than 3 new content items in the RHS block? I reckon 5 would be better...

you mean latest news up top of main news index?

Yeah was thinking that, I reckon five would be good as well, but like John said it'd then push the rest down the screen and we're using three in most other places, so not sure either way.

Ah sorry, no- i meant on the sidebar of the forums... It is "latest content", but in reality this is usually news

ah ok. I'm thinking of making this yet another "randomised within the past three weeks" block so it's not news all the time. I reckon more than three would be too much space usage when we've got other blocks (like related articles and stuff) going.

about the latest news, are we gonna have that on the front page again? I'm not sure how good it is to have random news stories from the past week or so. Stops people/me thinking of events in a linear way.

Can we not just have it the old way with latest news on front page, the latest non-news content below it and then random bits from the different sections below that?

hmm, if we do that, then decent news stories drop of the front page really quickly.
there's still http://libcom.org/news/latest for a strict linear thing.

Been thinking - to get some different content in the new content block - could just mirror the front page blocks but one article each. I'm going to try this and see if it works just to check out.

ok have tried that, reckon it's ok. Both are set to update every 6 minutes or when something is added/updated/deleted. Might need to rename "new articles" to "articles" to avoid the duplication of "new".
