IT's fucking shit and stupid and now as a result of it I've just wiped an article I was writing. IS there any way I can get it back? going into the cache memory or temporary files or something? I'd been working on the story for ages.
damn, sorry mate. i did that earlier too. I dunno if there's any way of getting it back. All I can do is suggest in future writing them in Word... I think that'd be best anyway, then you can save them for your own records/posterity/future historians

go to history and then you can select recently closed tabs.
I used to write in notepad and then save them afterwards but when I started doing them at work I got out of the habit.
I might copy my stories into my myspace at some point, probably as a blog. At the moment I just put links in to my new stories.

that was the plan, but my myspace gets virtually no hits right now, so if I archive the old stories in a blog I can increase the number of hits. hopefully. Also I can link back to the old stories as well. if I do a site search limited to libcom.org/news and use jef costello as a keyword that should bring up all my articles right?
http://libcom.org/users/jef+costello/news
http://libcom.org/users/jef+costello/library
and etc.
This will work for all users now I think. If you have a space in your username, use a + instead, or just type it in with the space. - doesn't work yet but might soon.
thanks catch I didn't realise that was working now
72 articles in 7 months. Not bad eh?
You guys like the mining strike article? It seemed a bit lacking to me but I couldn't figure out why.
I've got another mining one but that will have to wait until the morning I think.
Jef, it wasn't working - I made it after I saw your post since I'd been promising for a few weeks.
Will take a look at mining strike.
edit: yeah that's a good one.

cool thanks. I wasn't sure if it had always been possible but because when I asked I talked about using the tracker so I hadn't got across what I actually meant

Hits aren't connected to google rank. Google rank is based on how many links there are on other websites to a page, and using what keywords. i.e. Some linking to jef costello's fancy blog will increase the google rank of your blog for the words "jef" "costello" "fancy" and "blog."
Links from pages with a higher google rank are worth more than links from pages that fewer other sites link to, so it's cumulative. If you have more myspace friends, then, and post more comments and shit to other people's profiles then your myspace's google rank will increase.

I made a myspace page John. I'm not sure if I can manage to make friends too.
I did ask people to link to the articles rather than reprinting them.
Does this mean instead of sending a bulletin telling people about articles I should post a comment instead? Cause that seems wankerish but could be worth it.
edit: should I do a belated "thanks for the ad" type post to all of my 'friends' and maybe stick a few keywords in that? or will keywords only work if they are actually in the link, like in your example?

Yeah a comment about each one seems a bit much. A good compromise would probably be doing blog posts about them with permanent links. You could send a bulletin with the same info if you wanted, and I guess for particularly important articles you could post comments to politico type profiles with a link to the article.

yep only in the link. Though you posting comments to other people's pages will create an autolink to your profile, which will increase its google rank, and hence the rank of all sites it links to as well. but it won't make much difference, so i wouldn't worry about it...
tbh I'm not sure myspace links will count much any more with google since there's so many spammers on there (not you Jef, people who make auto-content myspace blogs linking to phentermine). You may get actual visits though, which is what you really want anyway.
