ah right that explains it - as it's only the 7th of this month, when it said 5,850 posts this month i thought that seemed massively high for 7 days

Nah, it normally hovers somewhere betwen 5,000 and 8,500 most of the time. I guess it should say "last 30 days", need to tidy all that up anyway.

yep, was just looking at how we display our stats for matb and was having a look at how other boards did there's (we currently show what happened in the last 24 hours, anarchist black cat shows the last 7 days, here the last month)

tbh it's mainly convenience for us so we can keep track of what's happening month by month.

It's counted direct from the database yeah. iirc it counts forum topics and all comments (or it might only count comments on forum topics) - either way it should be over 95% accurate. Also this month is 'last 30 days' or 28 days or close to that - seems silly to count from 1st of each month.
Any particular reason?
