Article comments

The new format for article comments (I don't know if the change is intentional or not) looks like a disaster to me

Yeah, we just upgraded the forum module, which has had the knock-on effect of changing the look of article comments. We should sort it soon hopefully so please bear with us

OK good, as long as it's not intentional

On a related note, will the functionality to skip to the latest unread post in a topic be making a comeback? I for one found that feature very useful.

Cheers for keeping us informed, Steve. smile

i think it's still there, but it's broken on the 'anarcho-syndicalists in britain' thread due to the unpublished comments.

Yes it's still there, just on the left hand side at the top of the thread rather than the right.

i'm starting to like the new comments. although they could be made a little neater / readable (adjust the placement of the 'new' and the 'quote' 'report' 'reply' text)

it makes the comments appear more understated in comparison to the article.

i for one would prefer if we didn't go back to standard forum posts under articles

I don't mean to sound like an ungrateful toad (I for one know nothing about website design etc, etc), but I do not agree with H Myers' sentiment.... sad

Yeah I don't agree with him either. I think as they are now, they are awful, and it seems like discussion on the articles is suffering because of it.

as per above, this is a glitch that we didn't pick up in testing. i assume it's a CSS class thing somewhere, but while i know vaguely what that is only a couple of people involved in the site might be able to fix it, and have to do so around work commitments. i guess the other option would be to roll back the update until we've fixed it on our test site. Mike Harman?

Admins stick the following in a css file for a quick hack solution. It's not super pretty but a bit better. Saturday night quality though...

div.comment {
    margin: 2em 0 1em 0;
    padding: 0 0.5em 0 0.5em;
}
div.odd {
    background-color: #f4f4f4;
}
div.even {
    background-color: #fafafa;
}
div.submitted, div.links {
    font-size: 0.75em;
    line-height: 2em;
}
div.submitted {
    border-bottom: 1px solid #ddd;
}
div.submitted a {
    font-weight: bold;
}
div.links {
    padding-left: 3em;
    text-align: right;
}
div.content {
    margin: 2em;
}

result^

To get the avatars back you have to fiddle with the backend. I tend to stay out of the cms's so I cant help you there.

Anything new on this? There seems to have been a noticeable drop in comments, too...

Yeah - it's almost 2 months since this got mentioned. I know admin have a lot on their plate, plus it's the summer, and I imagine people are on holiday, but Mark's original comment

is still true.

Copy and pasting Cooked's styles above into this stylesheet is a 5 minute job:

Unless I'm missing something...

And yes thanks very much cooked also! Sorry we didn't see that at the time.

One thing though, it has also shrunk the text of the "bookmark this, feature, lead" etc text and articles. But that's not really a problem I guess.

Deleting the code in bold below should cure that:

div.submitted, div.links {
font-size: 0.75em;
line-height: 2em;

Hehe. No worries. Haven't done much typo correction recently tbh due to a lack of time.

Done the font size now as well, thanks!
