Well you could switch javascript off, but yeah I'll probably put it in it's own block then.
log message is because we've enabled revisions on just about everything, this'll be collapsed in D6.
I was browsing libcom using an eeePC ([url=http://eeepc.asus.com/global/]) yesterday and the browser became very slow, with the CPU usage going up and down in short intervals but being maxed out most of the time. When I switched off Javascript the browser became responsive again, so I think it's due to the (otherwise very satisfying) news ticker. I suppose a lot of visitors with less powerful CPUs will have this problem (although it could also be due to littlefox firefox theme I installed.)
Could you enable visitors that are not logged in to switch off the ticker as well please?
There's a lot of javascript in Drupal (and in other modules we've got on here). The main thing we can do is get this site upgraded to Drupal 6 as quickly as possible where there's a new, faster version of jQuery available, and additionally we'll be changing round a lot of js enabled modules (and there's js aggregation as well). The ticker is just one of many, many things that could slow down a low spec pc unfortunately, but probably one of the least of them. Making it optional for anonymous users isn't an option giving the way we've got caching set up either (and switching that off would make things considerably slower across the board).
So essentially - yes it'll be optional at some point, but we're unlikely to be doing a lot on that front until we work on upgrading the theme for D6, where we'll be changing a bunch of other annoyances anyway. That's going to start pretty soon though.
OK, great - I'm very much looking forward to Drupal 6 anyway (once views, cck and panels get upgraded) for a site I set up.
btw., libcom Javascript is now maxing out my Core 2 Duo T5500 with Firefox 2.0.0.13 on Ubuntu Gusty (plugins: Adblock Plus, Filterset.G, Firebug, Zotero, YSlow). I don't think it was doing that before.
Actually, it happens only on certain pages, such as this one: http://libcom.org/forums/news/mexican-revolution-gets-a-step-closer-29032008?page=1
but not this one : http://libcom.org/forums/organise/wsm-04042008?page=2
Also doesn't seem to happen with the same page in Opera 9.50.
Hmm, nasty. Again I pretty much want to rip everything out and start again rather than patching things up at the moment. Also I'm no javascript debugger unfortunately.
Views and CCK are tantalisingly close, I think we'll probably see 1-2 more alphas of views tops before it goes beta. Have you tried it out? afaik, cck is primarily tracking views at the moment as well.
Panels is going to take a bit longer, just got a new co-maintainer but needs to get to RC in 5.x before there's going to be any serious
work on an upgrade. Similarly we're planning to use nodequeue a lot more than currently. So it's going to be 4-6 weeks before we can do a lot. Not complaing though, it's going to be lovely when it happens.
Hi,
There seems to be a flashy web 2.0 thing happening on the right sidebar.
Just thought I'd let you know that for ADD types like myself this makes the content I was looking for very difficult to read. Is there a way to disable it? Maybe put it in it's own block and allow me to turn it off in my account preferences?
Another site I use has these, they are worse than gif animation which at least you could tell your browser not to display, or press [esc] to halt. But there seems to be nothing to do about these other than put a sticky on the side of the screen.
Thanks for all the work.
(PS I just noticed there is a "Log message" box below this one, is that intentional? On my site only admins see that IIRC.)
