Hadn't realised quite how much buffy had contaminated the site. Any chance of regular posters in future being given the means to clear up any future disaster, other than just banning the spammer? It's a massive job for admin to go through countless of threads to sort it all out, and if this happens again, I'd guess they could use some help from those with time on their hands.

The only way to let regular posters delete spam posts would be to give them mod privileges. I'm not sure of the chances of that happening, or even if it's a good idea.
If you can ban spammers then that's great and posting the name of the spammer in this thread with a link to their profile (rather than a post) With a link to the profile we can pull up their posts and delete them reasonably quickly. If you report individual posts then that speeds up deletion as well.

ksybin is all over the place . The link is now to his user profile as you said, though I've already banned him/her.

Thanks guys, those posts were all deleted in about 2 minutes. The report function saves a ot of time as a post can be deleted wih two clicks from there.

didn't realise how many unreported posts those tossers had, that took ages.

Deleting the posts doesn't - so far - seem to have the effect of not having them put up high on the 'recent posts' list, even though one I just saw (something about banning leaflets) was way back in 2006. But perhaps that requires extra work...?

I think that having the CAPTCHA when users log in is pointless, as a spammer will only log in once anyway, while regular users have to deal with the hassle. Is there any way of making the registration process itself arduous so that it will become less cost-effective? Say have a quiz or something?

What about adding a field to the registration form, asking for a brief presentation and the reasons why one would like to joint libcom.org? In combination with moderating the registration instead of letting it pass automatically, this would probably block most spammers, as they will not have an adaquate answer to the question.

Tojiah:

Quote:

How about:
1. Lenin was a State capitalist scumbag. True or False? (everyone apart from the unmentionables knows the correct answer to that one).
2. Complete the following well-known saying: "Humanity will only be happy when the last capitalist is hung by the guts of the last_________________" (correct answer "spammer").
3. Rearrange the following into the first part of the first sentence of a well-known book: "The capitalist commodities of wealth in which the immense production of method announces itself, prevails as an accumulation of societies."
4. Fill the gaps: "In______________where _________ _____________of ___________prevail, all of _________ _________ itself as an __________ ________________ of _________________"
5 Who said, "Mankind has grown strong through struggle"?
(a)Hitler.
(b)Trotsky.
(c)Mao.
(d)Che Guevara.
(e)Chavez.

That should sort the chaff from the wheat, no?

I just had to clear a bunch of escort services from news, I think we should only give news posting rights on request. It doesn't look good to have spam in the forums but in the news section it looks terrible.

CAPTCHAs are apparently becoming useless, not in the face of better technology, but in the face of sheer human resources:

One of the services in question is the India based decaptcher.com, which will allow you to retrieve its API once you put money in their PayPal account :

“Using the advertisement in blogs, social networks, etc significantly increases the efficiency of the business. Many services use pictures called CAPTCHAs in order to prevent automated use of these services. Solve CAPTCHAs with the help of this portal, increase your business efficiency now! Follow these steps:

1. Register
2. Contact us at admin@decaptcher.com to put money to your account via PayPal and retrieve API
3. Login to check your balance

You pay for correctly recognized CAPTCHAs only”

Time to find a better screening mechanism. How about an arduous sign-up method that will take at least an hour per user? Make the whole thing less cost-effective?

I like the idea of a quiz as Samotnaf suggested. Maybe not quite those questions, but even so - then the answers can be vetted, though it would require a mod (or team?) to look at new registrations.

Turned out to be real spam and not someone's ironic view of how to fight capitalism by cleaning your own carpet sad

Just spent 15 mins reporting all the spams of eeemmaa after banning him/her: just to say, the idea of a simple questionnaire for new posters (as previously mentioned ) should be seriously worked out, as these spams are a fucking drag.....
