Taxing Poll Riot

The current poll (how much do libcom readers earn per year) is completely f*ed.

Exchange rate is not the same as what what money buys in a country. For example a pint of beer costs US$4 in Portland, USA. That doesn't mean a pint of beer costs 2 quid in the UK.

For the most part, in industrialized countries, wages buy roughly equivilent amounts. That is, a worker tends to get as much for their Aus/Ca/NZ/US$ as they do for a UK Pound , Yen or Euro (at least in the core countries). For example a kilo of Grapes are discounted this week to £1.99 at the Co-operative Stores in the UK. At my local Fred Meyer Grocery, the cost is 99¢ per pound. Roughly the same.

BTW: which dollar is the poll referencing? Why no Euro?

Hi fnbrill,

Yeah you're right about the £/$ stuff.

I think no Euro because 1. we have lots of Americans 2. Wages, GDP etc. are often converted in to US$ internationally.

Yeah, it doesn't really work. Cost of living, and so wages are much higher in the UK, though in real terms can be lower than the US. We thought we'd try it though.

Also euros look like monopoly money so you can't really take them seriously.

Actually, a pint of beer was a poor choice as I knew that beer is one of the few exceptions to the $1/1£ rule. Don't know why I picked it out as an example. Candy is another exception - UK being both cheaper and better.

it's atleast 2.50 a pint in N.Ireland unless you go to a shitty wetherspoons or a social club.

today I was pleasantly shocked to get two pints for 4 quid, though it was in the Glentoran FC club bar.
