I'd be game for having a go at 'Army', although military stuff generally is an interest of mine. I've been a student of military history/theory/tactics and so on since I was a lad and I'd like to try being Freedom's defence bod if that's OK. I'm also from a military family and learned a lot from relatives who were in the forces.
I'm closely involved in conventional lobbying/protest and direct action against the nuclear facilities down here in Plymouth, and have contacts among the peace movement that might be of use. I'd be happy to broaden my focus to include military issues generally when writing for Freedom.

What about the arts/culture?
Arts/culture is a matter of opinion rather than expertise i would have thought, but if it was done that way would be an area in itself
Edit: Though having said that, some of the reviews of anarchist literature require a fair bit of background...
education... sort of
nhs mental health ... a bit out of date but still.
A few more issues to add etc. I did say "Food" BTW (pretty important IMO but you may have noticed I think that from my column
)
Policing and crime
Children / childcare (it's not just about education, y'know)
Transport (as an issue and an industry)
Communications (industry - post and telecoms - plus it has one of the few unions with any fight in it)
Utilities (gas, electricity and water supply - again regular issues related to this)
Taxation
Banking and finance (industry)
Environment (issue - possibly too big - needs splitting)
On another point, I don't think you can have Local civil service. People work for local govt or the civil service, and have a different relationship to the two. Most civil servants are involved in benefits, pensions or tax credits administration. Local govt covers pretty much all the services you get from your council, except education which is generally seen as separate. While a lot of things are best left to local correspondents where they exist, an understanding of how councils work and what services they are obliged to provide is useful, I think. Council services can be broken down broadly as (though it does depend on the tier):
- council tax collection
- council tax and housing benefit administration
- social services (incl meals on wheels and home helps)
- education
- libraries
- rubbish collection and street sweeping
- parks and grounds maintenance
- housing
- homelessness
- planning and land registry
- "regeneration"
- street lighting
- roads and pathway maintenance
- parking enforcement
- cemetaries/crematoria
- environmental health
There may be some I've missed (it's late and I live in London). And I'm sure others will be able to add more.
Regards,
Martin
K will try and incorporate at some point in the near future, too late in the evening now tho.
Gosh...have been inspired and just sent Freedom something on the NHS!!

Tain't come through yet, account's been doing that a lot for some reason.
K Martin's bit are in.
check out all the experts in education
you could put me down for banking & finance
i came into the shop today and took away a whole load of stuff for the accounts and stuff, will take a wee while to plough through everything and get a hang of what goes on there, once that's done can look at putting in place a system/process for keeping on top of things going ahead
as there's a fair bit of activity, paper, bookshop sales, donations, subs, distribution etc. etc.., i'd suggest looking at getting an accounting software system put in place to keep track of everything in one system (bookkeeping, invoicing, stock control etc..) , it all seems a wee bit fragmented manual, and all over the place at the momement, it could be made a lot easier without too much effort, i'm happy to do it and keep on doing the accounts going ahead to take some of the pressure of jayne
Fantastic cheers oisleep
alright saii

hiya, yeah I'll give you a call in the next couple of days hopefully (been on deadline up til now). For some reason my mod privileges don\t work on this either so might need to ask about that for editing the top couple of posts etc.
i've not done much yet on your accounts (apart from plough thrugh about 3 years of correspondence and put it all into nice neat piles), not had much time, will try and get onto it in the next week or so
the IWW isn't a union?
PS: i can be put under 'education' and 'religion'
PPS: is this UK only?
K cheers for the update oisleep.
the IWW isn't a union?PS: i can be put under 'education' and 'religion'
PPS: is this UK only?
That list only counts normal unions of 25k people or over. IWW would count as a syndicalist union so fits into an entirely different category (and we're not so strapped for potential correspondents either
)
You could, but I can't mod the upper threads unfortunately. Will have to sort something else out for the list...
Well the list is but having a US labour correspondent would be cool
.
having a US labour correspondent would be cool.
would i get a press card?
You can make your own out of cardboard if you like
