Well I received my first copy of Freedom for this year, and it's the first in A4 format.

First impressions are of a well-laid out paper, although the print seems smaller than before.

Not had time to read any of it.

will use my long-arm stapler to keep the pages tidy.

Yeah the print is smaller than I originally did it though, I think our sub was trying to free up more room round the edge and knocked the point size down a touch, it's probably a bit too small for readers without 20/20 vision atm so may need putting back up. Didn't seem too messy without staples to me, any more pages and it'd be getting a bit of a handful though.

Was this change of format a result of cheaper printing costs being exploited? Have ye upped the amount of content or what was the reason? It's a pity Freedom isn't available online as a PDF.

Well originally the idea was that I thought our printer had a folding machine which can do A3 to A4 folds, which would have made distro faster, but when we got to it they said they couldn't do it so it had to go out the folding company again. Both me and the sub got it away on time this issue, but it came back late from the folders anyway, which is incredibly frustrating.

Yeah the amount of content - certainly the number of articles, can go up using the new format cos they're shorter but snappier. We got 42 different news stories in this issue for example (retaining 4-5 lead articles which go into more depth on big issues), with specific UK public and private sector pages, where we were had 27 in the December one which only had UK and international. And that's with a page added as a theory and history section. We lose a bit on the letters, but not a lot.

Atm we don't lose any wordcount from the A3 version, but putting up the font would probably mean shaving off a couple hundred or so, that'll be to discuss.

really like the new format and content - glad the old design works A4 style. for reasons i can't quite work out the paper seems even more substantial - new features are good too like the activism page...glad you got ppl to volunteer to edit them!

We've had first two of new format delivered to the Sumac Centre, Nottingham (where we stock most anarchist papers, mags and news bulletins). A lot of people were picking it up and reading it there last night so I guess that means it's attractive and easy to handle. I like it. How many UK outlets do you have currently?

I'll be honest, I was always fond of the actual newspaper format. It was a bit too big and should have been shrunk to A5 (like the sun)

but the new one likes like a much better version of Resistance. A decent news magazine. So yea, I really like it well done.

Cheers smile. Honestly I have no idea. I think we're stocked in most of the established radical centres and have a few other places but it's not al that many atm as we don't have anyone doing outreach (plus the thorny old issue of timeliness isa hampering how many we can be in sustainably).

I like the new format, look well and the text-size is fine.

Yeah we whacked it back up a bit for the most recent one so it’s basically the same as before, the sub did a bit of magic and kept the word counts around the same an all.
