I am not of the opinion that anarchist should subsume themselves into other campaigns alone; when its useful and possible, we should aim to initiate the campaigns.

Therefore 'big rallies' are somthing that would be happening sooner or later.

BTW did you know in i think 1992 there was a 1000 - 2000 strong anti-election match and rally called by all the anarcho groups at the time? It was addressed by them too. Not making a point here other than it has happened in the past.

Yea I heard about that, it's why the 1992 election got cancelled, right?

This would be the "Anti-Election Alliance" thing -- there's been the odd mention of it on threads on here, IIRC.

Unfortunately, the characters (some would say "jokers") behind the official MayDay march are dragging their heels on deciding whether or not it'll happen on 1st May, because of the clash with the GLA/London Mayoral elections (and the need to "stop the racist BNP"). Thus the website carries details of who the confirmed speakers are at the rally, but no confirmation of when the rally (and indeed the march) is taking place.

MAY DAY 2008 PLANS MOVE AHEAD - 11-12-2007

On May 1st 2008- which is a Thursday - there are the scheduled elections for the Mayor and GLA. There is an additional possibility that it could be chosen for a General Election. In the Mayoral and GLA elections there will be a strong campaign to oppose the BNP. We are committed by policy and tradition to hold the May Day March and Rally on May 1st and will stick to that.

...

LMDOC could not change the date of the March but was anxious to ensure that there was no appearance of working against each other and to maximise the efforts of progressive forces over the election period, in particular to stop the fascist & racist parties.

GLATUC have announced speakers so looks like march will be on......

Another option for selling Freedom in London is the Love Music Hate Racism festival on Sunday 29 April in Victoria Park - anyone going?

Believe this if you choose, but I checked the website before I made my post and read that very statement you quoted. And the last sentence of the first paragraph has been added since I looked.

Bloody Stalinists. grin
