Does the US have a left? Is the Democratic party actually in the right?

The political spectrum here in the states is entirely dominated by 2 party's, Democrat and Republican. Now I know what more or less qualifies as "left" or "right" differs from 1 part of the world to the next. But am I wrong in saying that both of the (lets be honest) only important political parties are on the right side of politics?

The way I see it is, one party is far right (Democrats) and the other party is nothing but Nazis that don't like being called Nazis (republicans.)

This may not be a contribution to your question, but this is hands down the worst thread I've ever encountered of yours. Not that you are obligated to conform to my standards, but did you really feel that it was necessary to make a thread for this question? I'm serious, and am not intending to be rude.

I fathom the Euclidian logic contained in the left/right dichotomy does not actually help you here (it is to us not even a question of interest because we reject all political parties)- try some class analysis and it all becomes clear as day.

Yes both are pretty far on the right. But the left-right spectrum is a pretty simple tool and usually very... categorizing and labelist.

The thing is they aren't intentionally fascist, they don't see themselves as such. They are all just bought off by big-money and the corporations and so their platforms reflect what the corporations want.

I think the both of them are gauges of public opinion. They wouldn't be so fucking bold if people didn't let them be.

But then again, that's just common sense isn't it? Since if people thought authority wasn't necessary, it wouldn't be. The mind is capable of amazing things isn't it?

I feel left out now...I do identify as an Anarchist, I (like you) reject all political parties...I was simply wondering if anyone else thought the same about this.

It is when it isn't forced to conform to a fucked up norm.

It is true that the USA historically lacked a large explicitly social democratic party, but so did most other English speaking countries. Labour parties made up the lack of social democratic parties in some of these countries, but not so in the USA. But since the neo-liberal world order came about, most social democratic parties have moved to the right and so it is not fruitful to talk about such social democratic parties except in the historical sense.

Yeah, I guess most of them are "center left" now like the German SPD, and we all know how that manifests itself. Not fundamentally different from the conservatives.

Sorry :(

There's no need to apologize to me of all people, but in that you consider yourself an anarchist, I would assume that you could have attempted to put thought into your question and came to a relatively simple conclusion. All bourgeois politicians and vanguard parties are to the right of anti-authoritarian anti-capitalists. The Democratic Party in the US would be considered 'Left' in conventional American politics, but they often take a 'Centrist' position. Not only is there a political spectrum, but there is an economic spectrum, which complement each other.

Have you ever seen this? The questions are somewhat flawed, and I wouldn't really considerate it to be accurate, but it can give you at least somewhat of an idea of where you position yourself.

That was...interesting? I did come up with my own conclusions to this question obviously, I like to get other peoples views and opinions on things.

Oh and according to that compass I'm apparently either a Libertarian Communist or an Anarcho-Commuunist/Libertarian Anarchist or something along those lines.

The "democratic party" isn't even a party as Europeans use the term, as we have no parliament.

Well if you start an org and want it to be involved in politics through a party, I see no difference in that org and a party (though that depends on your conception of a party, so YMMV)

The point however is that the linked post clearly contradicts your claim to be anti-party, though of course opinions change over time. To be fair you didn't respond like, hey I changed my views, but you apparently try to wriggle yourself out of it with semantics. wink

If you ask a NihCom though, he will say that all anarchist organizations are "the left side of capital", so in no fundamental way different from a party.

NihCom, I'm guessing that's short for Nihilist-Communist? Never heard that term before, but I like it!

Unfortunately, I think most forms of formal organization are inherently authoritarian, the best case scenario is oppression by the majority. It still represents someone making decisions for someone else. I guess that makes me a political nihilist?

If people can't make responsible decisions for themselves, why in the hell would we bother being Anarchists? No point in going 3/4 of the way.

Organizations can lack any sort of hierarchical structure.

Yeah, fucking hell, fascism was a very specific political system that has to contain a variety of characteristics to be fascist. Just because a particular party or state shares some of those characteristics (and, no doubt, the right-wing of the Republican Party does), it doesn't mean it's fascist.

We are all aware of what fascism is. Although the majority of Americans are not (Europeans probably know what it is) and I have no doubt that Russians know exactly what it is.

I understand the need to be politically correct, but none of us are trying to make converts here unless everyone here is really a closet Marxists so why all the hate?

It's a conspiracy to infiltrate the anarchist milieu.

I like to think of myself as openly Marxian rather than closetedly Marxist.

I dont agree with this. There are a lot of different views about what something has to be to be justifiably called fascist on these boards I think. Its very debateable, for instance, I would suggest there would be good deal that would suggest maybe the EDL are not actually text book fascist (though thats not to say they should not be opposed etc, they pose a serious threat)

You make a good point. Fascism probably more of a loose term, we all probably have different ideas on what it is. I for example believe Stalinist Russia to for the most part, fascist.

This I have the most trouble with. Dude, you are giving any non-anarchist, open-minded viewer a bad impression. I guess everyone is expected to find their own way without help? Some people just don't want to do that and I don't fault them. It took me a long time, several years in fact, of drifting throughout the Left before I finally settled with the Anarchist philosophy.

I see absolutely nothing wrong, stupid, or pointless with this thread at all.
