Does the US have a left? Is the Democratic party actually in the right?

I think one thing that's always annoyed me about libcom is that people give such a hard time to noobs (although it has obviously improved from when I 1st started lurking here 3 or 4 years ago). Don't any of you remember what it was like in the first couple of years that you started getting 'politically minded'? You are very unlikely to have much of a coherent analysis and will be massively contradictory in a lot of things you say. Lets all be a bit more helpful to others, yeh? Comradely criticism is a lot more helpful than taking the piss. We should encourage an environment where questions are welcome from those who are interested in learning more.

Fair point Bulmer.

However, by this understanding of fascism:

Quote:
I for example believe Stalinist Russia to for the most part, fascist.

The term is basically meaningless. Again, a state being totalitarian doesn't make fascist, although totalitarianism is certainly a characteristic of fascism.

I don't like being one of those wankers that says "read this book", but if you're looking to define the term fascism in any coherent way, I'd suggest having a look at this book.

This may not be a contribution to your question, but this is hands down the worst thread I've ever encountered of yours. Not that you are obligated to conform to my standards, but did you really feel that it was necessary to make a thread for this question? I'm serious, and am not intending to be rude.

This I have the most trouble with. Dude, you are giving any non-anarchist, open-minded viewer a bad impression. I guess everyone is expected to find their own way without help? Some people just don't want to do that and I don't fault them. It took me a long time, several years in fact, of drifting throughout the Left before I finally settled with the Anarchist philosophy.

I see absolutely nothing wrong, stupid, or pointless with this thread at all.

As I previously stated, I was not intending to be rude in my initial response, although I was very blunt in my opinion. Good impressions and conversions are the least of my worries, I'm not an idealist. To be honest, I am at times somewhat of a dick, but if I alone am capable of dissuading potential anarchists, then their interest in anarchism was merely superficial. All things aside, I'll take your criticism into consideration. I will anticipate the next thread HorrorHiro pulls out of their hat.

Du duddu. Marx is top notch, as are the Marxist Ultra-Left, which is why I was ecstatic when I discovered this forum.

The political spectrum here in the states is entirely dominated by 2 party's, Democrat and Republican. Now I know what more or less qualifies as "left" or "right" differs from 1 part of the world to the next. But am I wrong in saying that both of the (lets be honest) only important political parties are on the right side of politics?

The Democrats are to the left of the American Right and they are to the right of Marxists and anarchists(barring your beloved AnCaps) but I don't think it'd be much of a stretch to say both the Republicans and Democrats are centrist parties - personally, I couldn't care whether they call themselves leftist, centrist or rightist as they all serve capitalism

The way I see it is, one party is far right (Democrats)

roll eyes You are definitely seeing it wrong. But perhaps the Democrats will not be "far-right" if they set up a drugs gang or recruit a few Maoists and AnCaps.

and the other party is nothing but Nazis that don't like being called Nazis (republicans.)

wall You are definitely wrong here!

What part of exaggeration do you people not understand?
