If you want to collaboratively produce an article over the internet with others

Hope this won't lead to a slew of crap articles neutral

I thought i'd post about this very useful tool.
Its an online collaborative word processor that can be used by many people simultaneously from all over the world.
Could be useful if any libcommers decide they want to produce an article together.

You can also use googledocs if you want more privacy.

There are two hosts for pirate pad.

This is cool. I can see this being really useful for collaborative writing.

Don't mean to sound negative, but it will: is this different or better than from google docs? Genuine question, cos if it is I'll try to get people I collaborate with to use it.

Is googledocs really at least slightly secure? A genuine question to anyone who is good in this compared to piratenpad.

google actually bought up etherpad to use their source code (which was closed at the time). the source has since been opened and that is what piratepad is based on.

IMHO piratepad is quicker to create a new document, you don't need to faff with accounts, and it is open to anyone who finds the link to collaborate.

depends on what you are writing. eg. if its an Afed tract, then they'll want to use googledocs and close it so only Afed members have access. if its something you want anyone on libcom to be free to contribute too, then use piratepad

its not at all secure and should never be used for anything sensitive.
it just allows you to close things off from being editable by anyone on the internet (piratepad), and keep it private until you want to publish it.
