Sans papiers strike
On tuesday 15th of april started a sans papiers strike in Paris. The strike was followed in various places and around 600 sans papiers were on strike supported by the french CGT. The strike had a large echo for it highlighted a reality: sans papiers were working in France and not abusing the social welfare. Sanspapiers were paying taxes, paying benefit for french retired workers, sans papiers were honest workers.
Back a year ago, in the lovely region of Bretagne and its sea breeze and pig slaughterhouses. There is this town in the middle of nowhere called Montfort sur Meu. The typical breton country town. There is this huge slaughterhouse, Cooperl, employing few men from Mali. The lads had a good reputation in the town, they were playing in the local football club ( imagine that, african players in the local team, St Malon sur Mel can shake out of fear!), they had girlfriends, well, they were totally part of the town. Why wouldn't they?
Then came the horrible Hortefeux and his sbires. 25000 expultions a year were is quotas. Montfort sur Meu was not exepted. The maliens were arrested. Usually, few left wing people would go to the detention camp and make a bit of noise. Not this time. The whole population of the town went mad. The boss went mad, the girlfriends went mad but moreso the supporters of Mortfort sur Meu just lost their best players!! After months of demos, support groups, lawyers parlementations, the maliens were allowed back. And they live happy.... ( there is now a documentary available about Montfort sur Meu)
Back to the strike. Not only even right wing pigs had no real arguments but the bosses were highly supportive of the strikers. The strike is now over. There were not only the 600 strikers who brought their regularisation files to the Prefecture followed by 300 more. You can even read articles wrote by bosses in support of their workers ( that they pay cheap and do, as they say " the job that the french won't do")
So May Day this year will be international like every year but not in an ideological way. This here and now in solidarity of all workers.
