Philosophers Nigel Warburton and Slavoj Žižek join Jela Krečič to discuss her new novel, ‘None Like Her’, a hapless tale of the fruitless search for a perfect partner. The nature of love and marriage, as well as comedy are hot topics of discussion!

The Housemartins- The People Who Grinned Themselves To Death
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sz51Vc-Ylj8

They smiled so much and waved their flags
As she saluted to the military band
Most of the people failed to see
She had a broken bottle in the other hand
And she took them by surprise
When she took them by the throat
And said "My friend you're not allowed to vote"
But they shook it all off
With a nervous laugh and cough
"Next time," she said "I'll let those people choke"

The people who grinned themselves to death
Smiled so much they failed to take a breath
And even when their kids were starving
They all thought the queen was charming

She polished all upon the wall
And ran her hands right through her hair
So if the lady took the time to call
All the houses on the street would not compare

And she thought it really funny
That she hadn't any money
But those she looked up to, they had
But they shook it all off
With a nervous laugh and cough
And when they took her riches it was sad

Flag Day
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Xxt8gRVLnw

Too many Florence Nightingales
Not enough Robin Hoods
Too many halos not enough heroes
Coming up with the goods

So you though you'd like to change the world
Decided to stage a jumble sale
For the poor, for the poor

It's a waste of time if you know what they mean
Try shaking a box in front of the Queen
'Cause her purse is fat and bursting at the seams
It's a waste of time if you know what they mean

Too many hands in too many pockets
Not enough hands on hearts
Too many ready to call it a day
Before the day starts

So you thought you'd like to see them healed
Got blue Peter to stage an appeal
For the poor, for the poor

It's a waste of time if you know what they mean
Try shaking a box in front of the Queen
'Cause her purse is fat and bursting at the seams
It's a waste of time if you know what they mean

Flag Day, Flag Day, Flag Day

I found this post-punkish cover of "16 tons." It's a pity there's not a Crass cover around that could do justice to the anti-capitalist implications of this song.

Their performance at Glastonbury was one of the most beautiful musical experiences I've had. I only saw it on the telly but it was breathtaking nonetheless. My daughter was there and it ruined her weekend - everything was a letdown after Friday night.

Love old New Order (as in before the departure of Hook); haven't given much attention to their newer stuff. Nothing tops their former group JD in my opinion (which you'd be surprised that some people don't know about), though they dealt in different genres, punk and post-punk instead of new wave and synth. Curtis was a great lyricist and authored some pretty profound songs.

What didn't you like about them? I understand seeing One Direction wearing their album covers as t-shirts can put a lot of people off nowadays (and I even heard New Order and Depeche Mode being played at a Best Buy once -- these are well-defiled bands), but I always think it's unfair to musicians/bands and their original works to dismiss them because of what other people in the future do to their image, long since they have disbanded as a group. But yeah, I'm interested to know why you hated them so much.

I didn't hate them. They were nice enough lads but I just didn't rate them. I saw Warsaw at the Electric Circus up in Collyhurst, can't remember who was top billing. The Drones or the Buzzcocks maybe. Anyway, Warsaw were comparatively poor. If I remember rightly, I think the bass player had chalk marks or something all up his fretboard as some sort of "press here" guide. Bottom support band, I recall, was a band called The Worst. The clue was in the name (without any irony) but I don't remember Warsaw being much better. A few months later I saw the newly named Joy Division supported by a band called The Curbed (or was it The Curbs) at Bolton Tech playing to about 20-30 people. I found JD's music tedious and dreary (yes, I know that was the point). Still, JD were actually better than the support but as the Curbed might have been the worst band I've ever seen in my life, then that's not really saying much. I'm sure JD improved later on but I'd stopped listening by then and what had been a vibrant Manchester punk scene was all getting a bit too pretentious.

For the record, I don't know anything about One Direction t-shirts and I didn't like Depeche Mode either... but then I don't think I ever saw them play (thankfully).

Fair enough. I actually prefer their live performances to the studio albums (sometimes), though there are some fairly awful live recordings of them. You know you're a highly valued person within the JD fan scene if you indeed saw both Warsaw and JD live (somewhat of a JD fan myself, have the So this is Permanence collection of lyrics, photos and so on); I only came to know them through the wonders of the internet. I thought Depeche Mode's Violator has some nice tracks on it; cover art is neat-looking as well. What do you think of New Order then?

Like I say, I lost interest in the ĺate 70s punk/post-punk scene and ended up playing in blues and soul bands round Salford. Later I left Manchester and never really followed any of them bands or their spin offs after that so can't really say much more.

‘We got preachers dealing in politics and diamond mines
and their speech is growing increasingly unkind
They say they are Christ's disciples
but they don't look like Jesus to me
and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free

We got politicians running races on corporate cash
Now don't tell me they don't turn around and kiss them peoples' ass
You may call me old-fashioned
but that don't fit my picture of a true democracy
and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free

We got CEO's making two hundred times the workers' pay
but they'll fight like hell against raising the minimum wage
and if you don't like it, mister, they'll ship your job
to some third-world country 'cross the sea
and it feels like I am living in the wasteland of the free

Living in the wasteland of the free

Let's blame our troubles on the weak ones
Sounds like some kind of Hitler remedy
Living in the wasteland of the free…’

Nice song (if you're into post-punk stuff) from a band I've never heard from before. It does have a rebellious feel to it. The refrain was taken unwittingly from some nazi, though. Sisters of mercy seems to like covering it (and I read on wiki the lead singer apparently has anarcho-syndicalist sympathies).

That is relaxing, but I agree with the banal lyrics. I hate it when otherwise nice songs are spoiled with the songwriter banging on about breakups etc. Tropic of Cancer sounds pretty similar, but a lot of their songs deal with the same love crap.

Lou Usher sings ‘Blue Wing’.

He had a blue wing tattooed on his shoulder
Well, it might have been a bluebird, I don't know
but he'd get stone drunk and talk about Alaska
The salmon boats and 45 below
Well, he got that blue wing up in Walla Walla
and his cellmate there was a Little Willie John
and Willie, he was once a great blues singer
so Wing & Willie wrote him up a song
They sang, it's dark in here, can't see the light
but I look at this blue wing when I close my eyes
and I fly away, beyond these walls
up above the clouds, where the rain don't fall
on a poor man's dreams…

‘The confederate flags are a bit concerning’

Oops, didn’t spot that – the moral is - if you wear a flag on your head, you’ll get a bonce like a billiard ball.

B.D. had a hard core following and was ‘covered’ by other musicians including Muddy Waters, Buddy Holly, Them, The Yardbirds and the Rolling Stones.

"Sweet Jane" is a great tune off of that. I think I prefer the live version on American Poet. There's also the more melancholy 1969 version, but it's missing Reed's typical convention-defying lyrics ("Jack's in his corset, Jane is in her vest"). White Light/White Heat (edition with bonus tracks) is one of my favorite VU/Reed albums.

I always thought "Sweet Jane" had an anarchist/communist element to it (the "those who've ever played a part" bit), but anarchism/communism likely wasn't on Reed's mind (at least to my knowledge). The "Sister Ray" track is pretty nihilistic and all, don't really derive much from that (there are lots of Reed songs I dislike actually -- um, "I want to be black" is pretty tasteless, the album Metal Machine Music in its entirety comes to mind, etc.) There's a JD cover of "Sister Ray" out there. Reed's music seems all over the place (had a song called "Jesus" which I don't know what to make of), can't really pigeonhole him or anything like that. I gravitate more toward the prettier songs too ("I'll be your mirror" is great in that regard). Your relationship with this music is probably much different from mine; pretty cool the libcommers who actually experienced these musical periods firsthand.

Ok, so whilst I think the world would be a considerably better place without its existence, there have been a few instances where the saxophone has yielded pleasing results, namely the bass version of the instrument in glam rock, Roxy Music’s Let's Stick Together, and best of all, here, where it doesn’t sound much like a saxophone at all...

Oh I have no opinion on Naked City, just know them from that one scene in that Michael Haneke movie.

I haven't been able to get into non-American rap/hip-hop for whatever reason.

Here's a remixed version of Nas' "World is yours" off Illmatic, which btw is an incredible but flawed album, with the guy from a Tribe Called Quest (heard one album of theirs and it didn't really speak to me; their sampling of Lou Reed's "Walk on the wild side" was interesting, and a lot of their music has nice production and generally sounds good). It would have been nice if Nas developed more in the direction of political rap groups like the Coup or Run the Jewels, minus Riley's apparent Maoism etc. Anyway what I like about this is Nas responding to the powerlessness of proletarians (obviously and more specifically proletarians of color) with the scarface-inspired "the world is yours". Although I guess the communist interpretation of that, workers creating the world's wealth and having the collective power to get rid of capitalism etc., is less common than of just wanting to become Tony Montana.

I don’t remember hearing any Puerto Rican music before.
Recorded in 1935, based on events from 1932. Composed by Lolito Guzman.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kcxTjSczR10

Estan Tirando Bombas (They Are Throwing Bombs)

They are throwing bombs,
they are throwing bombs,
they are throwing bombs,
in the City of San Juan.

People, I’m going to tell you
about the island of Puerto Rico.
The people with some wealth
want to finish off the poor people.

Etc.

Does anyone still have "Demanding the impossible" by Skribbo (and doonhamer, the being, scatabrainz, butterscotch, etc, various scottish hip hop people)? I got it off bandcamp as a benefit for Freedom back when it was most recently firebombed, but now (several computers later) the bandcamp doesn't work. There were a few tracks on there that really id be pretty sad to never hear again.

Also, anyone know what happened to Comrade Malone?

I still have a copy, never actually liked it that much though - as the "benefit albums for longstanding pieces of UK anarchist infrastructure" genre goes, I much prefer the 1 in 12 fundraiser that came out a few years back. Feels a bit weird to be sharing something designed as a fundraiser, but I guess if the bandcamp's down then Freedom isn't going to be making any money from it anyway. Here you go. What tracks from it would you say are standouts?

A bit late to be recommending this when their UK tour is probably mostly over by now, but if people like folky stuff, especially that kind of Appalachian style, then you might like Cinder Well. At least one member used to be in Blackbird Raum if that means anything to people, think Cinder Well are a bit more "straight-up" folk though.

In just general fun energetic rock music, Dream Wife are kind of infectiously joyous, might be comparable in some ways to the Yeah Yeah Yeahs or Elastica maybe?

Read C.J. Sanson’s ‘Winter In Madrid’, some time ago, as I’d liked his entertaining ‘Shardlake’ series. So from the public library borrowed and listened to the Madrid book in audio form.

It’s good for bedtime listening. The story owes a debt to Hemingway and leCarrié - set in 1940, an ‘honourable public schoolboy’, Harry Brett, is recruited by the secret service to help ensure Franco remains neutral. Things get complicated.

6 CDs spun out over 6 nights, with starving Spain being crushed and exploited. Of interest though not brilliant.

Not a recommendation but music related - I've found this cool infographic (released as a poster) called the Alternative Love Blueprint. It maps out the entire history of alternative music. It doesn't include everyone you can possibly think of but it's comprehensive as far as including the most significant acts within the umbrella category of 'alternative'. It's useful in helping you find other artists you may want to spend time listening. So e.g. Arcade Fire is located near Neutral Milk Hotel, if you like the former, then you may like the latter.

I don't know much about blues/music history but I'm a bit puzzled why there wasn't more of a political or communist aspect to blues, rather than the emphasis on "bad luck and trouble."
