Lunacharsky, Bogdanov and their debates with Lenin

Submitted by jaycee on November 11, 2016

I am trying to research a piece on the 'God-Building' debates in particular but was interested in seeing any ideas/links people might have on this. I'm currently reading 'The Bogdanov-Lenin Controversy' but haven't read enough to really give an opinion yet.

I am toying with the idea of broadening this out to a wider analysis of the religious aspects of capitalism/secularism and the Russian Revolution itself so anything on this subject would also be appreciated.

Vladimir Nevsky's appendix to Lenin's (2nd ed.) Materialism and Empirio-Criticism: Critical Notes concerning a Reactionary Philosophy. It was included in English only in the International Publishers 1927 edition (pp. 329–36). Nevsky briefly belonged to the Workers' Opposition. He was one of the best historians of the Russian revolutionary movement btw.

Kautsky's review (in German) of a book of Bogdanov and Bogdadnov's reply:

Kautsky, Karl: Eine materialistische Geschichte des menschlichen Denkens. [Über: A. Bogdanov: Die Entwicklungsformen der Gesellschaft und die Wissenschaft (229 pp., German translation 1924, but I don't know what work this is in Russian.] Die Gesellschaft: Internationale Revue für Sozialismus und Politik, 2,1.1925, pp. 564–78. Jg. 2, Nr. 6 (Juni 1925).

And Bogdanov's reply: A. Bogdanoff: Einige Mißverständnisse. Eine Antwort an Karl Kautsky Die Gesellschaft 2,2.1925 Jg. 2, Nr. 9 (Sept. 1925), pp. 286—294.

An article by Ter-Vaganian (founder of the journal PZM and 'Militant materialist'):

A. A. Bogdanov and Bogdanovists on Art, «Воинствующий материалист», 1925, Кн. III, стр. 201-250.

(in Russian, not online)

There was also a 1907 review (in Russian) by Deborin of B's Empiriomonism (this reference I got from Ev. Pavlov).

This might be useful, although obviously, given where it comes from, might not be objective enough, or treat the ideas of Lenin's opponents fairly.

cheers for the suggestions.

Unfortunately I'm a typical British imperialist in that I don't speak any other language apart from English which seems to be a big issue with this topic. Still any translations you know of would be great.

The link to Nevsky's (admittedly short) piece is in English.

Lenin

As for A. A. Bogdanov’s latest works, which I have had no opportunity to examine, the appended article by Comrade V. I. Nevsky gives the necessary information. Comrade V.I. Nevsky, not only in his work as a propagandist in general, but also as an active worker in the Party school in particular, has had ample opportunity to convince himself that under the guise of “proletarian culture” A. A. Bogdanov is imparting bourgeois and reactionary views.

— Vladimir Lenin. 2nd September, 1920.

Plekhanov against Bogdanov:

Plekhanov

'in our country the attention of society is at present split into three parts, and concentrates on god-seeking, pornography and wrestling’. Unfortunately, this looks very much like the truth. I have never been interested in wrestling, and I have never had a passion for pornographic literature. But our contemporary ‘god-seeking’ does seem to me to warrant serious attention, and I should like to express the reflections which this trend has suggested and still suggests to me.

btw, Plekhanov also criticised Pannekoek's understanding of religion:
