Over the weekend of the Belfast Bookfair there's a fest on that is a benefit for the Warzone Centre. Quite a few of us were involved in the old Warzone Centre before it closed in Sept 2003 and are glad to see the project being revived.
A bunch of us will be going to this after the bookfair.

Pavillion is decent Weeler, not even close to being a shithole, quite a nice venue, serious!
According to Deezer 'you can get a good dirty working class pint' there[/working class charicature]

The Pavillion is just about my favourite bar in Belfast (so that makes it my favourite bar in the world) but the word I used was 'decent' not dirty, for 'dirty' pints try Wetherspoons (ask notch8)

And Gamma Bomb are not punk. Organise! can't avoid going to this fest because a significant proportion of our membership in Belfast are actually in bands that are playing. That and its for a good cause. Oh aye, and some of the bands are actually pretty fuckin good.

This thread gives me nostalgia for going to Belfast back in the day (way back when I was still technically a trot). We drank a bottle of buckfast in the street outside Lavery's and then the WSM gave us a copy of their paper. Good times.

Line-up for the fest has shifted slightly, Lobotomies now on the Friday as well, Axis and Carosah pulled out of the Saturday so if anyone knows any bands that would like to play get in touch with www.myspace.com/nuclearwinterfest. Pure Anarchy.

Thanks to everyone who came along to the bookfair, some interesting discussions and chat and great to see friendly faces.
The 'gender & equality' and 'fighting racism, fighting fascism' talks promoted significant points for discussion that meant they both went way over their alotted time - but in the end that was a good thing and they were important discussions to have smile

Agreed Choccy, the discussions this year were well-attended and interesting but on the whole there was less stalls and less people than previous years; one or two more-radical-than-thou types and all-told a little disappointing. While the crap weather may account for some of this, it is interesting to note the hundreds that went to the Warzone Fest.

I was saying to Deezer today that it might be mutually beneficial to merge both these events (Bookfair and Fest) in future, and if we can get the social centre open on time, hopefully that'll be the venue (we're in ongoing negotiations with estate agent still).

www.warzonecolllective.wetpaint.com for latest

Back in the 1980s when Warzone put events on at the Art College in Belfast there were numerous stalls there too and although most people were there for the gig they did take an interest in the literature, and this remains a vital avenue to inform newcomers about anarchism. The gigs were mixed genre and not exclusively punk as well I might add. This is the kind of thing I'm talking about.

I would also add that there needs to be better advertising of the event in general but otherwise a shout must go out to the organisers and everyone who helped out, or just came along. All said it is vital to keep this event going so it can only be a positive that it still is!

A big speaker also to pull in the masses and help to build the bookfair's publicity roll eyes The organisers need to move from the idea of having just a bookfair for the sake of it to how can we make it the best and biggest event in the left and wider labour movement in Belfast. The SWP stall outside Tescos on the day would have received more interest!

perhaps this is the first time the AF, WSM and a few others have not sold really anything at a bookfair cry

I hate to say it but libcommunity was much more exciting this year than the actual bookfair.

The SWP stall outside Tescos would have? Oh fuck off Maloney. Both the SWP and SP stalls in town got rained off, the weather was atrocious and the city council have started a policy of covering posters with shitty brown and green paint.

Numbers through who came along for a casual look were certainly down on last year. We were a stall down (Barracka Books has closed since last year). I reckon the bookfair, in its own terms was a success. The meetings were (unlike a recent WSM Belfast Branch dayschool) just as well attended as previous years and worthwhile. The discussions were productive. There are certainly lessons to be learned but I'm not to keen on a 'celebrity' approach and would rather build things slowly and in a sustained manner.

Sales were down, but apparently for some more than others, and to be fair there was nothing on the WSM stall worth buying.

well, I would expect bookfair meetings to be bigger anyway mate. There would be something wrong if they were not! I was referring to your average trot stall on a good day. wink

The bookfair is defintely worthwhile but thought previous years was much better in terms of numbers and better advertised. I am well aware of the new council policy, and there are of course other way round it!

Depends what you want to have. While it does need to be vastly improved you could have the biggest event by combining it with the punk gigs - big mistake in my opinion or by inviting vegans and nationalists or any number of things. I think the main problem is belfast is a tiny city and with two anarchist groups, one of which was perhaps unofficially agressive towards the bookfair, it can never be the major event the dublin one is.
