"bend over for the bosses and wait for the trickle-down effect"

Is that an intentional extended metaphor? eek

7 April, 2008 - 21:47

grin

Classy stuff wink

This 'Ulster' thing doesn't quite sit right if you ask me, wudda loved to have been a fly on the wall at the discussion that was had about that.

7 April, 2008 - 21:51

It fits ok with an organisation that has branches north and south which helps, and 'ulster' has is used and abused by both communities in the wee north. We also intend to distribute outside belfast.

I think comrade that you under-estimate the association of the term 'Ulster' with unionism and loyalism and this may potentially do you a dis-service. First impressions are important, and most first impressions of the 'Anarchists in Ulster' bit was incredulous disbelief (thats from a range of people who have seen your bulletin).

Um, can I ask a serious question?

How can the 'Ulster' claim to be issue 102 of when its the first publication of its kind for the region? Issue 1 surely?

It has a snazzy lay-out (to be expected) but the journalistic content isn't great. I've already expressed my reservations about the article on Republicanism.

Having said that I'm sure it will improve over time and I wish ye all well with it.

For Anarchy and Ulster!

The mask my father wore. black bloc

7 April, 2008 - 22:47

Sure l'm an Ulster Anarchist, from Erin's isle I came,
To see my International of honour and of fame,
And to tell them of my forefathers who fought in days of yore,
That I might have the right to wear, the mask my father wore!

It is old but it is beautiful, and its colour it is fine
It was worn at Kronstadt, Aughrim, Barcelona and the Boyne.
My father wore it as a youth in bygone days of yore,
And on May Day I love to wear the mask my father wore.

7 April, 2008 - 22:51

Actually, that's quite good. There's a round of drinks in it if any of the Irish contingent sing that at the London Anarchist Bookfair next year.

7 April, 2008 - 23:01

Tell you what Button, I'll do it if you buy me dinner.

7 April, 2008 - 23:03

You'll have a bag of crisps with your coke, and like it. angry

7 April, 2008 - 23:05

Its an Ulster cover on the 'normal' Workers Solidarity - hence the numbering. Dunno if there's a need to change it or not. From working in libraries and archives I'd rather keep it at 102, 103 and so on. It can be quite hard to track publications through name changes, irregular numbering etc and the consistant numbering makes the relationship between both editions clear. Mind you thats a small enough aspect...

At the 2005 london bookfair the WSM and a few other all went to some irish bar got pissed. There was a shit band singing rebel songs. When they stopped we all sang The Sash and a number of other loyalist songs, one of our members new the entire versions of a surprisingly large number of them. The WOMBLES who were with us were mortified. It were fun. Memories from the corner of my mind..........

Petty? Well you would say that having missed the NUJ fringe conference and the significant proportion of discussion devoted to such matters as media strategies, journalism, 'professionalism', and snazzy layout.

None of what I said was meant to be petty and I have said I hope it improves, and I'm sure it will, in future. 'Ulster' in the blurb ain't a petty concern. Poorly written articles that have northing to do with the headline or photo associated with them isn't a petty concern, reckoning its a bit late in the day to realise Sinn Fein aren't socialist is not a petty concern.

Thanks for the reasoning on numbering jackwhite.

For a moment I thought your were talking about Organise! publications. Wow, you go to one NUJ meeting and all of a sudden you are mr media. For what its worth the issue was not the sole effort of the ex-member you are obviously playing out a grudge against - it was sub-edited by the usual WSM editorial group etc. I think its a great edition and certainly better than the nothing that your own group is currently producing. We should take your concerns on board though so you will be able to help distribute the next one? Great.

At the 2006 some of us sang god save the queen, for lack of better songs.

If the title were entirely accurate it would be (A) Newspaper Of (A Minority Of) Anarchists in Ulster. As it stands, it declares itself the official and only publication of Anarchists north of The Border (which Im becoming increasingly convinced we need a big wall built along).

What complete rubbish..

8 April, 2008 - 22:25

"newspaper of anarchists in ulster"

come-on, it does give the impression that it's representative of ulster anarchists
I also think it's bizarre language to have on the front of your first issue up here - it looks like a wind up wink

8 April, 2008 - 22:26

Apart from the fact being that it is still a Workers Solidarity newspaper with more local issues. If Organise! had any sense which i very much doubth they should get on with building their own group and propaganda if there is any instead of attempting to score rather childish cheap political points.
Unfortunately you said it, it might just be the only official publication in the north or whatever you want to call it because organise dont produce regular, sustained propaganda... confused

How's it rubbish? The title clearly implies that it is THE newspaper of Anarchists in Ulster, when it is obviously A Newspaper Of Some Anarchists In Ulster. The title is disingenuous, dont try to play dumb and say it isnt.

8 April, 2008 - 22:44

All i know is I laughed my balls off when i read the "newspaper of Anarchists in Ulster" blurb. Was nearly as funny as the time I was described as "Ulster Youth" on the front page of Daily Mirror.

8 April, 2008 - 22:55

Orangise! should produce their own paper called Newspaper of Anarchists in Northern Ireland than....

8 April, 2008 - 22:57

Exactly it's playing dumb, it was clearly chosen for a reason - are you telling me you didn't think carefully about something you declare boldly on the front page? Come-on. It's just bizarre really, even we wouldn't say something like, despite joking about it!!
