Anarchists to converge on Dublin on St. Patrick's weekend
Anarchists from around Ireland and the UK will converge on Dublin on Saturday 15th March for a day of meetings and discussions. The third annual Dublin Anarchist Bookfair will take place in the Teachers Club on Parnell Square and is expected to be attended by over 1,000 people over the course of the day.
Anarchist and libertarian politics have grown dramatically in Ireland in recent years. Membership of the anarchist organisation Workers Solidarity Movement - who are organising the Bookfair - has grown by almost 200% over the last 3 years. Last year's Anarchist Bookfair was attended by about 800 and this year's is already expected to be even bigger.
There is a growing interest among trade union, community and political activists in anarchist and libertarian ideas. This is reflected in the list of topics which will be discussed over the course of the Bookfair.
Running concurrently throughout the day will be a range of discussions and talks covering many major issues which are of concern to everyone living in Ireland today
· The Health Service
· War, where next and how can it be stopped
· Family structures in today’s society
· Climate Change
· The Lisbon Treaty
· An introduction to Anarchism
· Palestine - what can be done by people here.
· Social centres, how can they be developed and what are the practical very real obstacles that need to be overcome.
· Feminism and Class
· Community resistance to police brutality
· Trade Unions
· Abortion and the struggle for true choice in 21st Century Ireland
There will again be stalls selling a huge range of anarchist and radical books, pamphlets, zines, DVDs, T-shirts and more. In addition there will be plenty of stalls giving out information about campaigns currently active in Ireland – from Shell to Sea to Residents Against Racism to trade union campaigns.
As well as the meetings and books, there will be a film room showing alternative movies and films all day.
“The Bookfair isn’t just about the books,” said Dermot Freeman of the Bookfair Organising Group, “although you’ll find plenty of books there. But the books are just one part of the overall spectacle. The Bookfair is about creating a space where everyone is on the same level – whether completely new to the topic of anarchism and anarchist politics or a seasoned activist. People come to the Bookfair to learn, to meet friends, to meet strangers. People come to the Bookfair to catch a film, go to a meeting or a debate, to take a day away from the mundane. And hopefully all of us can take more away from the day than what we might have picked up off a stall. And that is the most important thing…”
