Hunger Strike under way
Demonstration Friday 15th April 12.30 GNIB Burgh Quay
Yesterday, Thursday 14th April, residents of a hostel at 79 Gardiner Street in Dublin received letters from the immigration authorities. These letters stated that they must report to a Guard in their hostel everyday at 5 o’clock. They were told that this was being set in place to prepare for their deportation. The residents of this hostel are all parents of Irish children. Many of these parents have children living outside of Dublin. Forcing them to report to a guard at 5 o’clock ensures that they will not be able to visit their children. Rosanna Flynn said “Many of these residents started a hunger strike when they first received the letter. They applied for residency under the scheme introduced by the Minister for Justice and now the same minister is preparing to deport them. Once again we are faced with a lack of transparency from the department. The first time that solicitors heard of this was when the letters were given to the residents of the hostel. We are calling for a halt to the deportations, and for residency to be granted, so that the Irish children can grow up under the guidance and protection of their parents.”

A resident of a gardiner st hostel was delivered a letter yesterday by an immigration officer stating that as a "non national who does not have permission to be in the state he must reside or remain at the hostel and report to a member of the guards at 5pm every evening. " He was told this was a precursor to deportation.
All the residents already sign on every morning. penalties for not reporting to a garda at 5pm is a fine of up to 3000 euro or up to 12 months imprisonment plus being liable to arrest without a warrant.
The hostel owner wasn't informed of new signing on regulations. If all the residents have to do this they will be unable to visit their children in ennis and around the country. This new move on the part of the ministry for justice is causing panic and fears of mass deportations.
Lets show Adolf McDowell what we think........
A mass deportation is to take place this wednesday 27th April. Residents Against Racism have called a demonstration to prevent the deportation. The demo has been called for 2 o'clock outside the Garda National Immigration Bureau, Burgh Quay, Dublin

Stop the deportation
Demonstration Weds 27th April 2 p.m.
Garda National Immigration Bureau, Burgh Quay, Dublin
Residents against Racism are holding a demonstration at 2 p.m. outside GNIB, Burgh Quay in protest against a planned mass deportation.
The last mass deportation was met by protests from communities across Ireland, and received condemnation from many quarters of civic society. Kunle, a leaving cert student, was deported and subsequently returned after Palmerstown students took to the streets. Groups across Ireland and Residents against Racism are campaigning for those deported on the last chartered flight be brought back, as is the wish of the communities they lived in. Despite this Minister for Justice, Michael McDowell is going ahead with another mass deportation
Rosanna Flynn spokesperson for RAR said:
“Michael McDowell, ignoring the widespread condemnation of his policies, is preparing for another mass deportation. Communities across Ireland have come out in large numbers to protest against his brutal practices. Many of the people deported had not exhausted all the legal avenues that were available to them. There were children separated from their mothers after the last deportation. These children still remain parentless in Ireland. Many of those deported remain hiding in Nigeria fearing for their lives.
The very fact that, despite this and growing public concerns, McDowell is attempting another mass deportation reinforces our demand that the asylum process be removed from his hands and into a body such as the Human Rights Commission. Recent statistics have shown that the asylum numbers are dropping, this is happening across Europe. Despite it being a European wide phenomenon McDowell is attempting to take the credit. McDowell would claim credit for the invention of the wheel if he thought he could get away with. It is no wonder he has become known as the Minister for Injustice and Lies.”

Illegal deportation takes place after suspected assault on asylum seeker
Protest Friday 20th May 12.30 GNIB, Burgh Quay
On Thursday morning a Nigerian asylum seeker Michael Alabi was illegally deported from the state following his suspected assault at a hostel in Gardiner Street. Michael was resident of a hostel whose residents several weeks ago went on hunger strike following their virtual house arrest, and Michael was the last resident to stop the hunger strike. Residents of the hostel reported that when the Guards came down to the hostel for the residents signing on they brought him in to a room and locked the door. Residents then reported hearing screams of pain from Michael. When the Guards came out of the room with Michael blood was pouring down his head.
Spokesperson Rosanna Flynn said:
“Michael was deported Thursday morning without any of his belongings. His case hadn’t had its due course and it was currently on appeal. We contacted the Refugee Legal Service this morning who confirmed that there had not been a refusal on his appeal and they stated that he should be returned. We in Residents Against Racism also demand his immediate return and a full and open inquiry. The suspected assault that took place is a damning indication of the abuse that Michael McDowell has allowed to happen. His racist comments yesterday, branding all asylum seekers as bogus, were swiftly followed by a vicious assault, an illegal deportation, and a hardening of racist attitudes within the immigration system. His comments yesterday reinforce our demand that the asylum system should be taken out of his hands and placed into the hands of a body such as the human rights commission. No doubt we will hear another “cock and bull” story from the minister about this assault and illegal deportation, the time for stories has ended, its time for his resignation.”
A protest will be held tomorrow Friday 20th May 12.30 outside the Garda National Immigration Bureau, Burgh Quay.

god that is fucking disgusting. are people going to try to stop the deportations at the airport? you probably know this anyway, but it is a tactic that has met with some degree of success. airlines don't like to carry deportations and if there are large numbers of people being shoved on aircraft with fuss and protest, they'll like it even less.
