Changing iww.org (social networking and other ideas)

Submitted by Stripey on 30 November, 2007 - 14:42.

This is the approximate text of a message I posted to sysadmin@lists.iww.org, which seems to be the primary means of getting stuff done at iww.org:
http://nocog.org/?q=node/1 also make sure you look at the mock-up of what it could look like.

Please read and comment.

It is about the concept of Social Networking (like Facebook) and its potential application to iww.org

As background I would like, inertia be damned, to change that site in major ways to make it more useful and useable. Some ideas I have are:

  • Seperate iww.org International from American
  • The usual stuff about online reporting and dues payment
  • Clean design with clear goals for the website
  • Logical site structure that doesn't require a year to get used to
  • Getting rid of, or at least minimising, the anarchist heavy red and black thing
  • Facilitate sharing of information and contacts between wobblies
  • make the forums more usable by reducing their number

I would like to ask, in addition to what you think of all that, what would your pie-in-the-sky goals for iww.org be? In a perfect world, what would that website look like? How can the web help people who are organising?

Oh and here is what I think ought to be done with iww.ca

I think iww.ca would be an easier project to start with and would be valuable to test principals. Also I don't think it is currently used much and there isn't much to loose if it doesn't work out ideally at first.

1. either that or have all iww sites federated from the international site, like catch mentioned somewhere.

2. yep

3. word.

4. word x 200

5. well, insofar as the contrast is a bit tricky and isn't the most accessible, yes. personally, i think it is possible to remain red n black without the heaviness of the current site. check out CNT-F or SAC for examples.

6. indeedio

7. ...or hiding private forums for specific branches, unless you're registered as a member on the website

This got sidetracked quite a bit, but some good ideas were discussed:
