New GMB in San Antonio soon

Submitted by Partisano on 21 October, 2007 - 01:23.

I've made contact with four other fw's here in San Antonio and we are planning to soon launch a drive to create a new GMB here in S.A. Does anyone have any advice? I messaged Mark Damrón about maybe getting early delegate status so I could sign up new wobs, but we'll see how that goes.

Soli to all,

why not find out about local industry and what IU most of your local members are in and try to create a IUB?

congrats, best of luck. Hoping to start one here in NC after the new year. We can chat, trade lessons and ideas. I'll look forward to it. The big question, of course: will you accept online memberships?

This is good news. When you've established a solid group, I would recommend having the first item of business be hosting a two-day organizer training - get the branch focused on shops immediately. There is a component to th training called Building Strong and Active IWW Branches, not always included, but very useful for new branches. Brill knows what I'm talking about.

I got to Minneapolis late in the branch forming, I got here like right before we signed the charter. I'd be real happy to put both of you in touch with people from here who were more active in the early stages. There's some cats in Gainesville and DC/Maryland would could be helpful too w/ what did and didn't work for them in forming new branches, and in commiserating about some of the inevitable setbacks and stuff. PM or email me and I'll pass on folks' contact info.

I second Kizzle's suggestion to hold an OT, too. We started working on getting one right away after we chartered, ended up having it about 3 or 4 months after we were legit. It totally helped us out.

If you S.A. folks aren't in touch with any of the Austin wobs and want to be, pm me.

Sounds good! excited to hear it. One thing I think is worth contemplating isn't how to become a GMB, but when. Having a GMB is a lot of bureaucracy that if you aren't in a position of strength could pull you away from the exciting and positive organizing. It might make sense to wait until you've built a solid basis in shops and an industry before launching a branch. Let me know if I can help in anyway.
