10 non-revolutionary revolutionary songs

With the odd exception, not actually Revolutionary songs with a capital 'R' but if you want to read something into them, they're all pretty revolutionary in their own little way.

Friday On My Mind the Easybeats
Business Goes On As Usual Roberta Flack
I'm The Slime by Frank Zappa
Lean On Me by Bill Withers
Ascension Day by Third World War
What Have They Done To My Song, Ma by Melanie
A Change Is Gonna Come by Sam Cooke
The Flashing Blade by The Flashing Blade
Stress Killer On The Loose by Papa Brittle
Step Right Up by Tom Waits

How about Dolly Parton's 9 to 5?

Friday on my mind is great, haven't heard any of the others.

Check out the Sprechgesang style of the voice in Arnold Shoenberg's song cyle Pierrot Lunaire.

A true musical revolutionary.

I prefer the remix to be honest.

Last verse of Friday on My Mind (1964) is a winner:

Do the five day drag once more,
Know of nothing else that bugs me
More than working for the rich man,
Hey I'll change that scene one day,
Today I might be mad,
Tomorrow I'll be glad,
I've got Friday on my mind.

Heh heh... here's The Flashing Blade which was actually the theme tune to a French dubbed kids TV drama called The Flashing Blade. It was made in 1968, so I guess the writers must have been influenced by events. Incidently, as ftony will verify, I performed this song at the BIROC social.

As for Ascension Day, if you fancy a bit of yobbo/urban guerrilla rock from 1971, that's 10 times more punk than the Pistols, then Third World War is the bizzo.

down with dissonance, the mob did cry! tongue

wikipedia wrote:
Stravinsky's music is harmonically adventurous, with an emphasis on dissonance used for its own sake. Rhythmically, it is similarly harsh, with a number of sections having constantly changing time signatures and unpredictable off-beat accents.

though to be fair, he was at least half a century ahead of autechre

I've been looking for that show, I remember it was really funny, but I may have been easily amused at the age of 6 smile

I'm The Slime
by Frank Zappa

I am gross and perverted
I'm obsessed 'n deranged
I have existed for years
But very little had changed
I am the tool of the Government
And industry too
For I am destined to rule
And regulate you

I may be vile and pernicious
But you can't look away
I make you think I'm delicious
With the stuff that I say
I am the best you can get
Have you guessed me yet?
I am the slime oozin' out
From your TV set

You will obey me while I lead you
And eat the garbage that I feed you
Until the day that we don't need you
Don't go for help...no one will heed you
Your mind is totally controlled
It has been stuffed into my mold
And you will do as you are told
Until the rights to you are sold

That's right, folks..
Don't touch that dial

Well, I am the slime from your video
Oozin' along on your livin'room floor

I am the slime from your video
Can't stop the slime, people, lookit me go...

What about "Soup is good food" by the DeadKennedys?

The unions agree
sacrifices must be made
Computers never go on strike
To save the working man youve got to put him out to pasture

The Rite of Spring is brilliant.

I remember studying it at school and literally passing out and waking up covered in sick.
