300

good movie? I thought so. I can't help but think something was lacking though. not sure what. Have you guys seen it yet?

12 March, 2007 - 13:07

I haven't see it yet, but I'm certain that it's going to be fully historically accurate.

There's no way it could not be accurate.

What is it?

12 March, 2007 - 13:09

a film about the battle of Thermopolai (sp? - I'm sure Grace will correct me).

Slightly outnumbered but better armed Spartan forced defeating a Persian army due to superior terrain becomes 300 people defeating an army of a million. Probably.

12 March, 2007 - 13:39

i think the 'real' event as recounted was in a narrow mountain pass wasn't it, so blocking it off for a bit with 300 people on a shift system probably wasn't that difficult. didn't they all die in the end though?

actually i'm going to shut up so grace has less to correct me on tongue

12 March, 2007 - 13:41

The main thing i remember about the spartan armies is that they apparently all bummed each other as a bonding exercise cool

Quintus est in atrium.

Goddamn, the one time people think I'm gonna be brainy about something and I know absolutely fuck all about Thermopylae.

The one interesting thing I know about the Persian wars is that the Persians got fucked over at the battle of Eurymedon and someone made this vase -

This is a Greek and the writing says "I am Eurymedon"

This is a Persian ( you can tell 'cause he's wearing pyjamas) on the other side of the vase and the writing says "I am getting fucked in the ass".

Yay puerile humour.

12 March, 2007 - 13:57

Also, I really want to see that film.

except the correct spelling

12 March, 2007 - 13:59

Well kinda, it's Latinised, I could have been pedantic and said Thermopulai.

12 March, 2007 - 13:59

That's fucking fantastic, someone went to all the trouble of making that vase just for that lol

It's like if someone found a preserved viz magazine in thousands of years time and had to analyse it grin

12 March, 2007 - 14:05

It's my favourite thing I've learned about in my whole time at uni, without a doubt.

12 March, 2007 - 14:06

maybe someone can make a libcom vase?

12 March, 2007 - 14:08

Emo hegel?

12 March, 2007 - 14:10

Jack with his mohawk, I think.

12 March, 2007 - 14:10

The main stupid things about the legend are -

1. 300 Spartan warriors = an army of thousands - each "Spartan" warrior had shit loads of assistants and stuff, and there were also a load of (iirc) non-Greek troops too.
2. There is no fucking way an army anywhere near the size claimed for the Persians could have been supported at that time.

12 March, 2007 - 14:18

so basically this is just troy, but instead of being quite fun its just really shit, with dodgy racial clash of civs overtones and worst of all it doesn't even have brad pitt in it, or the dude who played hector so awesomely

so its going to be rubbish, but then again it also doesn't have that fuckwit orlando bloom in it, so every cloud has a silver lining

12 March, 2007 - 14:31

Troy was awful and Brad Pitt was utterly dire in it. I hope this film isn't as bad as Troy, it could be made pretty entertaining.

I do agree that the guy who played Hektor was good, in that he was basically the only good character in the whole film.

12 March, 2007 - 14:41

the only good thing about Troy was the horse

What? Clearly brad pitt was genius in that film, hector was better but his character wouldn't have worked if he hadn't had a good dominant achilles to play off.

How can you watch the first duel between the two champions at the begiining of the film, after achilles turns to the kid and says 'and thats why men will nto remember your name' and not think it was awesome.
The only thing i think the film failed to do is bring in more of the ideas of the genuine beleif in the favour of the gods in battle and society. But i think that was more because it was too much to fit into two and a half hours.

No, he clearly wasn't enough of a knob, and he wasn't mighty enough, and I didn't fancy him. Iliad 1, Troy 0.

Have you read Persian Fire by Tom Holland, it covers all of the Persian wars in a fair bit of detail talking about how Persia built up a massive empire and then looking at what happened in the wars. Apparently the Greek force was about 5,000 or so in total, I'm not entirely sure as I don't have my copy at the moment, there was a load of people that were there but a lot fled. The Persian army was definately huge by those days standards, they supported it by moving from city to city forcing them to provide them with food etc.

its going to be great, sparta kicked ass.

he was easily mighty enough, though your right he was a little bit too nice for achilles, but its a moot point overall surely, and brad pitt is well hot

I'm with Grace - clearly Achilles had a lot of issues and that is not how i would want to see him... grin

I wanted to counsel him and not shag him.. not good. sad wink

12 March, 2007 - 19:20

Very excited about this film. For those who've not seen the trailers, it's all Sin City style, based on a Frank Miller comic book also. It has like, people riding monsterous rhinos and stuff, and a 9 ft tall Xerxes. Also, that woman who was in the terrible Bertolucci film about incest and May '68. Out 22nd March I believe. Down with historical accuracy!

Oh no no, Achilleus would definitely have needed counselling. Poor bloke. Pitt definitely didn't capture him though.

Also I just re-watched the fight where Achilleus kills Hektor - Jesus fuck it's even worse than I remembered it.

Yeah but A. might not have felt able and willing to embark on a therapeutic relationship.. and i did say that is how i didn't WANT to see him, not that he wouldn't be troubled... smile

And of course Pitt didn't capture him - it would have been amazing if he had tbh!! Never gonna happen..
