'Old people'!!!? - have some respect sonny!
They were a good band as were lots at that time (Mekons, Newtown Neurotics, Delta 5, Pop Group, Ruts, Crisis...) Glad I was a teenager then. Bands weren't scared to be political either.
I read an article about them in some free magazine i picked up in a record shop ages ago and thought they sounded pretty interesting... didn't manage to track down any of their albums tho...
Found some of their stuff listed on p2p networks but only managed to download 2 tracks, "Headache for Michelle" (which sounded like it could have been a tribute/response to Cymande's "Willie's Headache") and "We're So Cool", which were good enough for me to buy an album if i ever find one...
anyone know of anywhere they're available?
Considering the current ( and odious) Gang of Four revival that is going on, what's the deal with the Au Pairs. An old comrade burnt some of their stuff for me and i do like it. Were any of the old people on this forum into them back in the day?cheers
Dave
I was a bit too young for them, but I got into them in a big way a couple of years back. I understand that the lead singer is now a lawyer in Edinburgh.
In reply to the other person on the list who is looking out for their stuff, I'm sure that their two studio albums 'Playing With a Different Sex' and 'Sense and Sensuality' were released as remastered CDs with extra tracks a couple of years back.
Best tracks for me were 'Dear John' and 'It's Obvious'
My understanding is that the two available albums are
"Shocks to the System" which is a best of
and "Sense and Sensuality" which is the second album
the track "come again" is the most amazing and painful depication of heterosexual dysfunction in the bed room ( or on the snooker table etc)
mad love

Yes, Dave is right. "Playing with a Different Sex", their first and best album is not available on cd as far a I know and if you want it you'll have to buy it on vinyl online. It's worth doing so because it's great.
"Sense and Sensuality", their second album is pretty good too but quite different. It's slower and funkier, and unfortunately features a saxophone, the worst musical instrument known to humanity. Their song "You" featured on one of the Rough Trade compilations a couple of years ago, so it should be pretty easy to find.
If you like the Au Pairs or the Raincoats I recommend getting hold of the Kleenex/Liliput compilation CD Kill Rock Stars put out a couple of years ago. It's truly outstanding.
