Berlin? Comrades?

I am rather suddenly finding myself moving to Berlin (!) at the beginning of February.

I don't really post that much these days, but I know that there are at least a few Germans who post on here, so if anyone has suggestions of ways to make some connections in Berlin, or if anyone wanted to just meet for a drink and whatnot, that would be great!
I am pretty much without many contacts (or, more particularly, without contacts who are comrades) there, and also I just started learning German a month ago, so I'm a bit worried about not being able to find anything but the most public, and probably annoying, bits of the ex-squatter/squatter subculture once I'm there.

Anyway, long story short: pm me or post here if you feel like helping me out at all, or if just feel like meeting a lost and confused communist yank in Germany...

PS-I think there are at least a few people on here who have met me face to face who can vouch that I am not a cop or totally sketchy if you are worried about it.

I'm from Germany but I'm not from Berlin. So I'm sorry, can't help you directly.

There was a guy who also thinks of moving to Berlin with whom you might to hook up with:
http://libcom.org/forums/general/english-language-day-day-coverage-faugerman-iww-19122011

Thread also has info on local FAU, maybe you wanna check them out while you're in the city. Would be my first guess at where to meet comrades.

Lived there a few years ago and still visit regularly.

stressfaktor.squat.net

is the events programme for the various social centres, spaces, political and social activities, it ranges from punks to the FAU to left communists and everything in between. Mostly autonome though. The FAU have regular social events in various social spaces. It depends on where you'll be living as well though but you won't have a problem finding projects when you are there. Check out the address list on the website.

You should also check out the tempest library when you are there. It's international/multilingual anarchists (and some 'anti-state communists' I think) living in Berlin and some good people. If you have "latent insurrectionist sympathies" then you'll find it of interest.
http://tempestlibrary.com/

Apart from that, I'm not sure what else. Have you got a place to live and job sorted out? It's getting more difficult to find cheap apartments in the usual places and there's a lot of "residential tourists" in Berlin so don't expect to find english language bar, cafe, etc. work. I'd really recommend getting your german up to speed in that regard, but for getting by and meeting people you'll be fine.

There's quite a few theoretical groups around, not sure exactly of your leanings and what you're looking for. Maybe friends of the classless society/kosmoprolet might be something of interest to you?

I can give you the same contact as george mentioned in the other thread. Send me a PM if you want.

Thanks much to both of you!

I've been wading through stressfaktor for the last few days trying to figure out what is what, but it is good to know it is targeted at a more broad section of the milieu than I thought it was.

I have a place to live lined up (moving in with a close friend who has been there a bit), and I have a few months of freelance work from the states that I can do in Germany as well as anywhere and also just finished a rather grueling seasonal job that has been paying my living expenses for the last few months, so I'm hoping to get by for a while without worrying to much about finding a job there, at least until my German gets somewhat useful wink
who knows if it will work...kind of a gamble i guess.

Thanks once again to both of you...I'll PM you for the contact!

First: My english is pretty bad but better that then nothing.

Here some infos about the left scene in berlin:

Starting at the right: the Linkspartei (Left Party) or Die Linke: The Left Party or The Left (http://www.die-linke.de/) is a left social-democratic party with round about 8.000 Members in Berlin. The Left Party has been a member of the so called red-red coalition as one of the two ruling partys of Berlin (from 2002 to 2011). More about this party at wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Linkspartei . The Left Party is a mix between a party for Eastgermany and left social-democratics.

There are some ML-Partys like the German Communist Party (DKP) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/German_Communist_Party), some maoist Partys like the Marxist Leninist Party of Germany (MLPD) (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marxist%E2%80%93Leninist_Party_of_Germany) and some trotskyist Partys but they don't play a real role in the left scene.

Many people are involved at the spontaneist / autonomist / anti-fascist szene. Between 1.000 and 2.000 People and nearly as much organisations. One of the major groups are TOP Berlin (http://top-berlin.net/) and ARAB (http://arab.blogsport.de/). You can find more infos at http://www.antifa.de/ . Once a year there is the revolutionary 1. May Demonstration with 10.000 – 15.000 participants.

The explicit anarchist scene is much smaller. Maybe 100 – 200 People. The biggest organisation is the FAU but they are small.

At the left of the left and theory oriented are groups like junge linke (junge-linke.org) and GegenStandpunkt (http://gegenstandpunkt.com/english/en_index.html) / http://kk-gruppe.net .

The so called Antideutschen – Anti-Germans – are a small group but they have some influence.

**

There are two importent issues for the left scene in Berlin: The normal antifa and gentrification.

The ICC has comrades in Berlin. You can contact the German section here: http://de.internationalism.org/contact

The ICC as an organisation does not exist in Berlin. There could be some comrads, but as an organisation they work in cologne and some other citys and not in Berlin. Or maybe I'm just blind.

BTW I'm signing my contract and moving assuming I hit no visa issues and the job offer isn't an elaborate identity theft scam! Should be in around March 1st if all goes well.

Hey, well everyone... the FAU-IAA are holding an English language event in Berlin this Friday 6th July at 8:00 pm at the FAU headquarters. Also a group of us foreign, English speaking FAU members have started meeting as a working group, check out this other thread for the info on the meeting:

http://libcom.org/forums/announcements/berlin-fau-meeting-english-fau-foreign-workers-working-group-02072012

It would be great if anyone who knew folks from out of Germany living in Berlin could make them aware of this. Also obviously we'd really love any English speakers moving to Berlin (whose German is lacking or none existent) to get in touch with us. Currently those of us involved come from all over, but meet in English; however as numbers grow other working groups could be set up in other languages.

Medwards gonna be there aren't you Medwards?
