the british accent in america

Submitted by fkschulze on 23 May, 2007 - 03:17.

i was thinking about how many times british accents are used on american television to sell products and i was wondering what accents are used in britain to represent authority and taste for the purpose of pushing commodities. it certainly aint texan.

telesales hire Irish because it's trustworthy.
Northern accents, like yorkshire are honest. London is streetwise sexy and cool, just like me.

23 May, 2007 - 08:05

isn't scottish meant to be the trustworthy one?

23 May, 2007 - 08:38

yeah, i'd have thought irish was more 'earthy and windswept', or alternative 'comedy' in the 'to be sure to be sure to be sure' kind of way

23 May, 2007 - 08:39

they seem to like using scottish women's vioces for tampon adverts.

(not sure why i remember that one confused embarrassed )

23 May, 2007 - 08:58

scots are used for financial services ads, Irish to sell food as 'wholesome, natural' etc

Generic TV-american accents are sometimes used in radio ads here, for stupid shite like furniture stores and car showrooms, no idea why.

Why do yanks talk about "british accents", what the hell is a british accent?

I'd forgotten about that.

You obviously put him up to it, though, on one of your frequent journeys to the toilet to ply your foul trade.

First off that Madonna link linked to another one called "madonna on religion - really interesting". Of course I knew it wouldn't be interesting but annoying, frustrating and make me want to stab.

Madonna: religion is synonymous with not asking questions. and what i call religious thinking is robotic thinking
How come you've probably tried every fucking religion under the sun you cretin?
Oh, but kaballah's different

and why'd ye have yer kid baptised in the catholic church seeing as yer not a catholic no more? It can't be to get them into a good school seeing as you've money coming out your arse.

that funny, scottish and irish accents on US TV have an air of edginess. they are used to indicate a character is rediculously cool and perhaps deadly, at least into some not-so-legal stuff. incidentally, it must be the easiest thing in the world for scots and irish to get laid in the States b/c of this. the irish, of course, also sell certain breakfast cereals... hmmm... maybe its easier for the scots, actually... any irish on this board get asked about their 'lucky charms' upon visiting the states? i am from texas and when i move to brighton in october (knock on wood) i fully expect to be asked about riding horses. i also expect to say the phrase "Actually, GW Bush was born in Connecticut" over and over and over and over...

23 May, 2007 - 15:47

Are you interested in anarcho-syndicalism?

23 May, 2007 - 16:22

are you asking me b/c you think i might be able to hook you up with a case of Shiner? yeah, i am interested actually. here in north texas i havent had much organizing experience, at least not along those lines. i'm mostly stuck doing propaganda (which is fun but not exactly effectual)

23 May, 2007 - 16:28

I'm asking because otherwise you might fall into the grip of the vile lifestylists than infect Brighton. angry wink

23 May, 2007 - 16:39

those sassy northern women

23 May, 2007 - 16:41

oh fuck off Jack. Do you think there's something wrong with a Benefit for Brighton Animal Defenders - vegan prisoner support?
what's with the cyncicism, just think about what we all have in common! Winking doesn't make it OK.

23 May, 2007 - 16:45

Maybe you'd feel better in Brighton Animal Defenders Vegan Action Group.

Its like the sexiest thing ever! I suppose there are many different shades of the "british accent" but its hard for me to tell the differences. Specially out here in the 'merican west were we can hardly speak english anyway, let alone read or write. sad

23 May, 2007 - 17:59

hmm. accents in the British Isles, as well as in the USA, tend to vary by class, not just region, in my observation. i recall a long conversation i had in a bar here with a working class guy from Wales, an ex-member of the Revolutionary Workers Party. Even tho we were both nominally speaking "English" i think i didn't understand half of what he said the whole evening. i found his accent impenetrable.
