so what, really?
Heroine worse than that, crack worse than anything. Only relevant if your a silly Independent reader who thinks cannabis is the new south africa.
Also, because it's called 'a single cannabis joint', it's too dubious. What's the average amount of weed in a joint? Is that with or without tobacco? Are you just working out the amount of bud you can fit into a king size rizla? And yeah, king size rizla compared to a normal sized cigarette?
too vague.
The extent of lung damage was directly related to the number of joints smoked
No shit, Sherlock.
basically agree with Bob Savage here - tobacco may be worse than cannabis for your health in a direct weight-for-weight comparison, but (admittedly anecdotally) tobacco smokers smoke a hell of a lot more, and a hell of a lot more regularly (a couple of joints every other evening versus five or ten every day). also I'm curious as to if this is just joints - what about bongs, hookahs, etc.?
I don't really give a fuck either way, smoking anything is retarded.
I just remember peopel telling me for years that were NO negative effects of smoking cannabis, which is clearly daft.
To be fair hanging around rasta's all the time gives a warped view of things....

thats ridiculous. Every time i smoked cannabis i encountered terrible negative effects. I think some people have called it 'being stoned'. I can't believe more people aren't aware of this.

Well most people don't say 'No negative' affects (as smoke of ANY sort is bad for you - i did a vaporiser in amsterdam before. that's a brilliant idea, no smoke at all, takes away a LOT of the problems with it), just rather that it's blown out of proportion. There are not any reported deaths to cannabis (well i remember reading about the first reported one, someone who smoked like 20-30 joints every day for over 30 years. died from poisoning. but even so!), yet tobacco smokers are dying and having all sorts of problems daily, people who drink are destroying their bodies and then killing others through things such as drink driving, and weed's not even physically addictive (mentally addictive for sure, i'm stuck on it in a big way). That's why a lot of people jump to the extreme of saying there's NO negative affects, simply because in comparison to the damage that other legal vices do, there practically is nothing there.
I also like how the media now go on about this miraculous 'stronger skunk', just because they realised they weren't going to get all the parents who used to smoke weed on board. The 60s bunch.

i ALSO like when the media reports that things such as paranoia are the affects of smoking. REALLY? NO SHIT. What else are they going to say? "You get hungry for chocolate and cereal". brilliant, thanks for warning me.
If you're smoking large quantities, you should get a vaporizer.
As I mentioned above, I smoked through one in Amsterdam in some Jamaican coffeeshop. Fucking brilliant. Me and my mate were 'smoking' it and didn't feel high at all. "Are we doing this right?... Are we just thick?" Then we rolled one joint, took a drag and it fucking hit us. excellent. I think I probably should buy one. The best cannabis purchase I ever made was the bukket bong though.

the amount of money it saves you because the amount of weed you no longer have to buy is phenomenal.
yeah I've changed this thread from straightedge guy posts a news story to talk about how dope weed is, wanna fight about it?
The Daily Mail has conclusive proof that a single joint can turn you an axe murderer, what more do we need to know? And we foolishly laughed at Reefer Madness back in the silly 60s!
Also David Cameron told an audience of Tories that he for one knows that today's skunk is much stronger than 'pot' was in his day because he went with the police on a raid and saw a big bag of skunk and 'The smell that came out of it. was really strong'.
It's very good that the state and the media are being scientific about this.
I just found a study California NORML and the Multidisciplinary Association for Psychedelic Studies did back in '96 on Cannabinoid/Tar Ratio using various smoking methods ( i would have cheerfully been a test subject) that had odd results. They found water pipes/bongs, etc. had the highest tar percentages even compared to joints! Vaporizers, on the other hand were the best.

I honestly did know shitloads of people who literally thought there were NO negative effects. I think they honestly thought there was soemthing magic about the smoke that meant it was different from setting fire to other things and breathing it in. But then let's face it, stoners are wankers anyway.
Cannabis, like alcohol and other drugs, can seriously make a mess of people with time. I've seen it happen as the users become crushed by the drug. That's not to say infrequent use when you're young and invincible isn't ok but for some it doesn't stop there and the effects of long term cannabis use can cause a lot of pain for the users family.

Particularly when it's illegal and you can go to jail and so on. I mean, why would THAT make anybody paranoid?

Really? I've never heard anything like that before.

I've got a friend you once told me that he admired me cause I could sit in a room whilst a joint was going around and pass it up if I didn't particulary feel like it, after that I used to watch him in that situation he would get really edgy and watch where the joint was and make sure people weren't taking more than their share. If he went more than a few days without pot he would be more grumpy and irritable than usual. I would agree it doesn't have the same devistating effects as say junk, or alcohol but it can still have quite a hold over some people and that can have serious repercussions on people around them.

heh I enjoy the smell. I'd say its a damn sight better than drunken vomit smell, or the drunken dry retching smell. Uhhh that was a not so fun night.Wait, I have to pick one? Can't I choose neither?
True, but I'd say the latter is a pretty inevitable occurrence every once in awhile. Even the most seasoned and reasoned drinkers need to get utterly shitfaced occasionally. Unless you go on sobriety. And where's the fun in that?
I've not smoked the stuff for years, stoners really piss me off. Especially the type who go on about all the wonderful fucking applications. Like it can be used for fuel, clothing and can cure cancer and save the world man.
And if it didn't make you really fucking high you wouldn't be anywhere near as enthusiastic about it. Twats.
Also I think the risks involved are far too high, I mean look at this poor guy...

Legalisation? I think de-criminalisation would mike slightly more sense from an anarchist perspective. Legalization would merely allow the state to regulate production and skim a tidy profit off the top in taxes. But why just de-criminalisation/legalisation for weed? What about speed, acid, smack?
I remember there was a thread about this before but I can't find it, but here's a new Guardian story
A single cannabis joint may cause as much damage to the lungs as five chain-smoked cigarettes, research has found. Medical examinations of cannabis and cigarette smokers found the drug increased specific lung problems, including obstructed airways and hyperinflation, a condition where too much air remains in the lungs when a person exhales.
