I saw a Punch and judy match between two cops in Genoa after one cop smacked a girl across the arm for no reason the other cop smacked him round the head.

AFAIK the light green ones are the out of town riot squad and the dark green ones the local cops.
I think the average plods on the beat who might still have some illusions about helping people tend to dislike the speed and roid crazed monsters whose job is simply to beat people.
according to a report on http://hatetheg8.blogspot.com/ the green uniforms are the Federal police, the blue ones local. i said in my caption that the darker ones in the picture were black but on looking at it again i think they're actually dark blue. black would be snatch squads.
I remember reading stuff ages ago about differences - possibly even the odd murder - between the two different national police forces in France although I think this was linked to the rival gangsters the different forces were paid off by.
The Gendarmerie are part of the military and the Police Nationale are under the interior minister AFAIK. Jef, am I correct in thinking there are also municipally controlled traffic police in France? The only non-white cops I saw in France were traffic cops, didn't even have guns.
David mate, you need to get your eyes and/or monitor checked, the darker German cops are clearly in olive green uniforms.

I am not sure, I think that the gendermes are 'militiarised' but not actually part of the military (1/3 of firefighters are militarised meaning that they cannot legally strike). Police Nationale is under the control of the Interior ministry, the CRS and the BAC (anti-criminality brigades, generally plain-clothes, act as snatch squads on demos) are part of the PN too (although in practise I think the CRS is autonomous.)
There are quite a few non-white CRS now, I remember the first time I saw a maghreb CRS I wanted to walk up to him and explain to him that the CRS are there to beat up arabs.
Friends on indymedia irc were passing this around. Apparently the cops in green went so berserk the cops in black felt they needed to step in.
