It is just Ferguson's usual drivel. I wouldn't pay it much attention.
United seem to be getting it together after a poor start. Arsenal are playing very well. It is looking like it may be an entertaining season.
I don't think the Champions League group stage means much to the bigger English teams. Something is severely wrong when they don't get through. I thought the second group stage was the more interesting one before they scrapped it.

There's no second group stage anymore...it goes into knockouts I think. And Liverpool and Chelsea are really struggling in Europe. And you're right about the prospects for this season, hence my "it's on". I seriously think it's gonna be a close one. Everyone's talking about Arsenal's lack of depth but we've already had injuries to Van Persie, Gallas, Rosicky, Adebayor, Hleb, Gilberto, Lehmann (?) this season and look at the quality in the Carling Cup team. And Fábregas has to be the most in form player in the world right now.
