eh no they don't, the issue of photo's is independent of that. The Civil Service and Peelers have similar policies regarding women and catholics and don't ask for photo's.

employment tribunals have used asking for photos as evidence to uphold discrimination claims, so it is related. you have enough grasp of logic to recognise that because not all PC employers ask for photos doesn't mean asking for photos doesn't have a PC motive (since this isn't a job where facial good looks have any importance, thank fuck

Would you take issue with affirmitive action that gave kids from shitty comprehensives a slight advantage over those brats who went to public school, all other things being equal?

yes but whether the employer asks for a photo or not isn't directly linked to the actual fair employment blurb, it's essentially an independent issue of how some companies crudely go about this stuff.

firefighter. hardly climbing the career ladder, i'd earn more if i put some effort into pimping my mad IT skillz (there was an analyst job recently at the fire service that started on more than the top firefighter salary).
now the point is the selection process is about as objective as it can get, with standardised national numeracy, literacy, situational awareness and physical tests. any possible gender/ethnic bias in the written tests could be eliminated by better screening of the questions rather than the applicants, and any gendering of the physical tests would likely reflect aggregate biological differences, although dexterity and agility are just as important as physical strength. the only bit where bias could significantly creep in is the interview, but anyhow you'd have to already trust their 'positive' discrimination to accept PC crap.
the reason women (and presumably ethnic minorities) are underepresented almost certainly more to do with societal roles and stereotypes than bias from painfully PC public sector employers, thus this kind of thing is at best a useless fig-leaf for not addressing the real issues and at worst counter-productive bullshit.

No one said it isn't liberal tokenistic shit, what we object to is the mental ranting personal whinging that bigots engage in, and in my experience, anyone who does engage in pissing and moaning about these sorts of caveats is a bigoted cunt.
In practice, I very much doubt it amounts to woefully inadequate people getting jobs - in the majority of cases I imagine it's more an 'all other things being equal' type affair - still liberal shit, but i very much doubt it's 'diluting' the skills of workforces so that poor hard done by people like JoeK who are 'much better for the job' don't get it.

mate it's not really going to affect your chances. as you said it's done on merit. if it comes down to you and another equally good applicant who's female and/or 'an ethnic' and they get it for that reason, yeah it sucks for you, but it'd also suck for them if you got it, and if there actually are loads more white men doing the job it doesn't seem a wholly unfair criterion to make the call on when everything else is equal.
fwiw i really hope you get it, then solfed will be 50% sexier because firemen are shit hot.

it takes on average 6 applications. this is number 2. thing is if it's about everything else being equal, they could simply make a note of your ethnicity/gender at interview stage, rather than asking for photos at the initial screening phase where most applicants are culled.
Obviously this is bullshit, and they're doing it for entirely market-related reasons not because of some great love of women and ethnics. On the other hand, you can't just pretend that race and sex aren't a factor and that most employers hire workers solely on the basis of their professional abilities.
I used to work at a freight forwarding firm some time ago that also had a "multicultural" hiring policy; ironically, that didn't stop them from firing a black employee after he had had made one silly little mistake, while several of the white workers who were completely incompetent shitheads were left in place.
