Good punk bands

Advice please - I decided that I need to see more live punk/hardcore this year (despite my advancing age and waist line) but am a bit out of touch. I like US bands like Pennywise, Bad Religion, Negative Approach and Sick of It All and was a big fan of Black Flag, Husker Du, Circle Jerks, Toxic Reasons et al., way back but hated all those crappy UK Oi bands like The Business and 4Skins (wasn't a great fan of Discharge or Conflict either)...so who should I go and see?

punk is dead, long live electro-clash.
I recommend Gangpol und mit, Alan's band they rule.

30 December, 2006 - 03:08

go listen to Hagar the Womb.

they're dead, though, you'll never find a cd (actually, none of their stuff was probably ever put on cd after). but you could find it on soulseek.

that said, i dont know much about punk, in all honesty. but Hagar is neat!

Propagandhi!

I really like several Chicago area punk bands from the recent past - Pegboy, Naked Raygun, Oblivion, No Empathy, Apocalypse Hoboken, Screeching Weasel, Sludgeworth, the Broadways. Current Chicago bands that I like as well are The Lawrence Arms, The Methadones, The Arrivals, Alkaline Trio, and Rise Against (especially their first two albums). The Dillinger Four are also quite good, from Minneapolis.

Nate-Rise against is quite good, Propaganhi are annoying vegans.
If you want hardcore Refused is the best hardcore band ever, cept they broke up. In which case you should see their successor band, The International Noise Conspiracy. Against Me! is a good punk band. Used to be good anarcho punk, but they've gone a bit soft. Strike Anywhere is an awesome anarcho-hardcore band. One of their songs uses stanzas from "mask of anarchy". Dropkick Murphys, Billy Talent, Flogging Molly, The living End, Leftover Crack, Catch 22, NOFX, Say Anything are all good well known punk bands.

Used to share a house with one of them. Had a drink with their bassist the other day (his flatmate got an anarcho quiz book smile )

Saw em a few times.

Got nothing by them tho sad

Ska-p is and will never be the best spanishband, the sold themselfs a long time ago.

1 January, 2007 - 08:13

Who cares if they sold out? Their music is still awesome.

1 January, 2007 - 13:03

might be worth checking out:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/radio1/mikedavies/

plays too much hardcore noise for my taste.
(no blooming toons!)

from my ocassional listenings I'd recommend Flogging Molly, dropkick murphys, anti-flag, AFI.

(his playlist is heavily US biased - not surprising though)

2 January, 2007 - 13:01

Hey - thanks for all the suggestions, some good stuff amongst them. Malfunction thanks for the link - I listened to Mike Davies last night, liked Bouncing Souls a lot!

Have to say though I am not a big fan of Ska Punk.

Anyway thanks again and expect to see me around at a few gigs this year!!!

2 January, 2007 - 13:07

Bouncing Souls for the win. They have a new album out.

2 January, 2007 - 18:25

If you like the Bouncing Souls you might like the Street Dogs, they toured together recently.

2 January, 2007 - 23:55

If you like hardcore try and check out Morning Again, probably the sxe band with the best politics. Otherwise punkers Sonic Boom Six are quite innovative, but not to everyones taste, or theres the usual Anti Flag, Randy, Brigada Flores Magon, Jeunese Appatride to name a few.

3 January, 2007 - 08:34

Brigada Flores Magon? Never heard of em.

3 January, 2007 - 09:22

Yeah, Sin Dios are muy bueno (pardon my Espangles).

A really good anarcho-punk band was Pixamandurries. I've got a brilliant song of theirs called "La bonaj vortoj" on an old compilation tape. Dunno if they're still going or if they recorded much else. Durruti, know anything about them?

3 January, 2007 - 13:23

Ok so I have spent the money father christmas gave me on-

Caution - Hot Water Music
The Gold Record - Bouncing Souls
Decemberunderground - AFI
A Senile Animal -Melvins
Manhattan love suicides - Manhattan Love Suicides

and to remind me of when I was young...

Moving Target - Penetration

The Morning Again full-length was pretty sweet. i wouldn't say they had particularly good politics, but they certainly made an effort and were very pragmatic. Of course their 2nd singer Kevin had a hardline tattoo on his neck!!He had long renounced it though.

oh yeah check out the Down and Outs
