What is transhumanism and extropianism and why is it banned on infoshop.org? I've never heard of it before.

no idea

It's banned there? Hilarious. It's just primitivism's mirror image.

From what I know of transhumanism you could sum it up by saying it's using science and technology to enhance the bodies of human beings, with immortality being a possible goal. Never heard of the other one though

Yep

That is fucking funny indeed.

Is this a joke post? Or are we banning primitivism, next? Think Chuck0, transhumanism is the exact and absolute converse of primitivism. If you can accept one extreme but not another then you have what we call a double standard.

I am absolutely not joking. If anybody comes to Infoshop and starts promoting Extropianism, their comments will be deleted and their accounts deleted. This stuff isn't even ON TOPIC for this forum.

We have a right to set parameters for what are acceptable topics on Infoshop. This is the same as any other website. Given that as moderator I don't even follow discussions here that closely, I think I have every right to step in once and a while and point out that certain topics aren't relevant to this website.

(bold from me)

I guess even the big tent has it's limits wink

That's pretty much it. You'll find it mostly in sci-fi books with the technological singularity (when tech change is going so fast that making any predictions about what comes next is impossible) as a theme. Some of these folks believe that it will be possible to leave your body as well, through uploading your "self" to some computer, though I believe that these are just taking the writings of folks like Stross a bit too literally.

Funny that it's banned on infoshop. Asher what you quoted from chuckOOOOOOOOO is hilarious.

That quote does read a bit like a thoughtcrime accusation!
Doesn't some of this technology already exist and massively help improve some peoples' lives?

16 February, 2008 - 11:27

Transhumanism! Fuck Yeah!

16 February, 2008 - 12:02

Isn't it just futurism for the sci-fi generations?

It's certainly more interesting than primitivism and it's wank about unlearning language.

Sounds alright
