it's becoming a social necessity ovah heah to have an EPL team to follow. i looked for some inside dope, and found this article, which is pretty entertaining. i can narrow down the choices a little: chelsea and man u are RIGHT OUT. i actually have a short list, but want to hear what yiz have to say. topics to address: hooliganosity of fans, look of uniforms, conformity to libertarian communist principles. historical tidbits also welcome.

start talkin'.

Surely using the term EPL means you don't like "soccer" and thus supporting a team would be rather pointless.

I thought of that article as soon as I saw the name of the thread.
Support Middlesbrough, it will upset Refused.

I don't think any of them have any kind of 'radical tradition' or whatever that i'm aware of, and there's not much hooliganosity going on any more. dunno about the kit, what colours would you like? maybe just choose one that's at a place where someone you know went on holiday once, or something? what kind of level of team are you after? it sounds like you don't want to be a glory hunter, but presumably you want a team which isn't likely to get relegated. liverpool and arsenal are the 3rd and 4th teams, with liverpool looking likely to really hit the big time after being bought by some rich yank, so you probly don't want them. if you choose tottenham, everton, blackburn, portsmouth, bolton or possibly newcastle (i'll get flamed for that) then you're in with a chance of winning something occasionally but couldn't really be accused of being a glory hunter. teams which are pretty unlikely to win anything but are also unlikely to get relegated include middlesborough (sorry jef), manchester city (though i think they've just been taken over by some rich dude so who knows), aston villa and reading. it might be cool to support man city, since everyone else presumably supports man u and you could recreate that 'local derby' atmosphere with your friends.

hope that helps!

Newyawka: You could choose a brand new EPL outfit - they wear a smart red & white striped kit - they are called Sunderland AFC (Association Football Club)- for your info it is said that the word "soccer" is derived from association. They have a massive fan base and hail from an industrial northern city - all very working class. Check out their website. Their Chairman claims to be a socialist.

Guys, guys, guys. We should encourage yanks to like "soccer", not mock them for it. They need some half-decent sports in their lives, for god's sake.

There's a phrase I never thought I'd hear.

May I suggest Fulham? They've got a few Yanks playing for them and they're shit enough to have a dubious kind of credibility. The main drawback is the whole al-Fayed thing, which might put you off.

I agree, you need to find something to connect you (however tenuously) to a premiership team. Are you Jewish? Try Spurs. A hooligan? Liverpool or West Ham. Love sheep and losing? How about Derby County?

And can I ask, which teams made the shortlist?

so far, tottenham and aston villa.
tottenham becuase they're not chelsea, arsenal, or west ham, the bird looks cool, and i like the 'yid army' thing.
aston villa becuase my father lived in birmingham during/after WWII and that article described them as having "the most miserable, self-loathing fans", so that sounds like my kind of crowd.

yeah, i thought about them as not-man-u, but that wasn't enough. i know no man-u types, but bizzarely amongst the teachers in my school there are three liverpool types, none of them english, and all fans for years.

Soccer is the number one sport played by American kids under the age of 12. FACT.

The problem is American TV. Soccer is played in two uninterrupted 45-minute halves. No time for commercial breaks.

As for the EPL, I support any team with a Nigerian player. I liked Arsenal when Kanu was playing, until that asshole Wenger had the man sitting on the bench all the time. I liked Bolton when Okocha was their number 10.

I don't have cable this season so I don't know where the Nigerians are playing.

Where does Jon Micheal Obi play? Assuming he gets some playing time, I support his team, whatever it is.

League Cup winners

2003 Liverpool
2004 Middlebrough
2005 Chelsea
2006 Man Utd
2007 Chelsea

we're breaking the dominance of the big four we are.
We got to the UEFA cup Final too (don't mention the score sad )

chelsea, though when he signed there was a weird episode where he was apparently 'kidnapped' by man united who then sold him to chelsea for megabucks [/trivia]

We call it rounders.

The trouble with supporting Sunderland is that they'll be relegated next year again. So will Fulham, probably. Really, they're all full of overpaid players - the average pay is set to be £1.1 million next year for a Premier league player.

In any event, a team with a decent history and something going for it, with an American connection would be Liverpool. If only because surely they've got to eventually break the monopoly of Man U and Chelsea.

Personally, I'll stick to lower league sides.

Re: Sunderland.... Relegation again, I'd like to think not this time round. New board, New Chairman (who loves the club to bits - thats why he bought it) ; Not forgetting of course the luck of the Irish - An Irish business consortium made up of publicans, farmers and race horse owners and Niall Quinn - Guardian columnist, philanthropist and retired super star- owning the club. On top of that there is Roy Keane - ok, unproven as a manager, but can anyone see him accepting failure? Keano has around 30 million quid to invest in players; Oh, and the new kit sponsers are Boyle Sports- the Irish bookies. The support base is there, the new season will guarantee 40,000 + crowds each week. Even under Peter Reid they finished 7th twice in consequetive seasons (Quinnie was a player then), but the previous regime refused to invest the necessary cash to consolidate and build. The rest is history until now.
