International Women's Day
Today is International Women's Day. Of course the local event in Preston, run by the Preston 'old girls network' is crap but nevertheless lets hear it for the real anarchist-feminists out there.
That's the best pic of her I've ever seen!
Haha I love how the thread about International Women's Day immediately becomes a thread about Emma Goldman looking "nice" or not
So, what's going on in Preston then, Steve?
if i was their lawyer i would try to argue that they were pointing out that not all radical women are mingers, and hence deconstructing patriarchial myths.
of course as their lawyer i'd be paid to say this shit.
edit, actually my line of defence would be that John looks like a girl and Jack is a bummer and hence seen as a women by default by patriarchial society.
Yea, we shoulda started on about what a sack of shite her politics were.
yeah, you're right that's all really funny. Sorry I'm not sure what came over myself, I'll go find some pictures of hot anarcho girls for you all to make up for bringing bad feeling into the boards...

i hope you don't think i was anything to do with this nonsense, though i do think Goldmans politics were a pile of shite.
Oh for fucks sake grow up.
Anyway... Ok back on topic... So, why are Emma Goldman's politics a pile of shite?

Yeah apologies I only mentioned cos I showed Ed a few hours before seeing it. The thread didn't seem particularly serious in the first place, or else I'd assume it would've been in Organise.
EG's politics might not've been that great - she was a big supporter of Johann Most and propaganda by deed - but she was very cool. Her autobiog living my life is great. And I found this clinic named after her the other day too:
Yeah, Organise! had planned to show the american documentary about Emma Goldman along with the Mujeres Libres documentary from the eighties for International Womens Day. Alas we were foiled by the Belfast postal workers strike and the EG one only arrived today and the Mujeres Libres one still hasn't shown up!
Imagine - real struggles getting in the way of anarchist history.
We will of course be showing them in the future albeit on a less appropriate date.

To be fair she did renounce propaganda by deed as counter productive after the Frick shooting, and found herself at odds with Most after their falling out...she didn't particularly support him but I think that was more down to personal reasons than political differences.
but she was very cool
Definatly

No - Most criticised the shooting and renounced PBD - she didn't, thought him a coward and that's why they fell out.
She also got angry with Berkman after he came to the conclusion that PBD wasn't that great as well, and thought he'd "sold out" in prison.
I believe she may softened a bit later on after Berkman was released...

She came around eventually... 8)
Damn well there goes my first semi-serious post on here up in flames

Sorry I was at work and didn’t have time to reply. I wonder whose picture I could have posted. I only picked the one I did because it wasn’t the usual ones you see of Emma.
Anyway in Preston they hols an event every year organised by the Preston Women’s Network who are a largely self appointed clique. It mirrors any other ‘community event’ with workshops for dance, reiki, massage etc. There’s always a lot spent on the food provided and there is never any political content at all.
happy womens day
What does IWD actually mean?
Mind you I'm so right-on I think every day is international women's day
Happy women' day to our 5 female posters!
happy womens day

Same to you!
Sovietpop made some excellent posts on the IWD thread over on the Tolling Gang, so I'm going to steal some of her ideas for heroes for International Women's Day 8)

The women fighting for abortion rights in Ireland

Subcommandante Ramonana and all Zapatista women

Trade Unionist Joanne Delany

Meena, the founder of RAWA (The Revolutionary Statement of Women in Afganistan) who was assassinated in 1987

hurrah for women past, present and future who are involved in revolutionary struggle to build a better society.

I saw the demonstrators for international woman's day in the centre of town today. last year in Istanbul the police beat the shit out of them in public on international TV, and it was a great national shme. 'How can we behave like this to women whilst the E.U. is watching'.
I am not really sure what is going on now, but I don't really understand it. They have full equality. The police beat the shit out of them exactly as they do anybody else. What are these women complaining about!

I showed our Ed that pic yesterday - it's the nicest one of Emma Goldman there is but it's never used. If I were her I'd be well pissed off.
