Hey guys

How exciting is this!! You can now buy a robot vac in the UK!! Lakeland Plastics may be a bit lame (home of such sexy prods as the "crispbread support" and plastic pickle tongs!) but this is really innovative for the UK!! I don't suppose anyone has one - perhaps the US posters may know of someone?? I am pretty sure if i bought one i would be the only UK poster to have one!! tongue

The only thing that stops me is ker-ching of course but if i had a spare £200 - ha! - i would def get this!!! Sooo awesome! This has been my dream come true since first seeing Star Wars as a kid and reading Asimov etc - my very own friendly and cute lil household service droid. cool

The Americans are so ahead of the game - they appear to have been using household robots for quite a time!! The company, iRobot, even has a users forum with techy householders posting!! For your further edification i have c and ped the below user review from the site - as you can see Alan is no longer in Mexico having fled north of the border...

When your a college student....

Alan F., mn, United States
Ok, so I have always wanted a Roomba and I have always put it aside. One day at Target I saw one, after I got a college apartment, and was forced to apply for a target card and get a Roomba! When I bought it, not only my mom but my other roommate as well, thought it was a bad idea... I charged it for the recommended time and turned it on before I went to bed and just after a college get together. I woke up and all the chips, dirt, lint, and other objects on the floor were gone! Lucky for me I had my roommate bet me that it wouldn't work and it showed him... The end result is I love the Roomba and I am more then happy to recommend the product to everyone who comes over, also it is a party topic and there is not one person who doesn't just love watching the Roomba explore! It's the party after math must have!

lol

What do you think guys?? tongue

roll eyes

Its a company tbh and they use Henry's - another great vac!! Not as high-tech but it has a cute face. Mine is blue, their's is red, it also comes in yellow and green. And they - the manufacturers have other vacs also named after stereotypes of English butlers i.e. Gordon, James.. etc... Some of these are a lot bigger and more powerful and some have industrial apps and some clean carpets etc etc... Because they are so appealing to children a lot of childrens homes and residential units for young people have contracts with the Henry providers.

Instead of being a grumpy fuck as per it would be nice to hear you enthuse about the Roomba.

Hi Lone Wolf - this is the acest gadget I have seen in ages ... Am starting to save up now. I have two cats who deposit a lot of fur all over my carpets and I am a lazy owner who can only be arsed hoovering up once a week ... but with the iRobot all my problems are solved (tho I am suspicious of the Asimovian connotations - when would the robot rebellion begin?!)

PS - Revol, just noticed the Bloch quote under your name there. Nice one, been a long time admirer of him myself. He's virtually ignored these days, but his writings are easily on a par with, or even better than, the other more famous Germans of his time - the ones who are now firmly part of the academic-culture industry. In fact I have something I wrote on Bloch somewhere on my computer, might be worth posting up on Libcom sometime ...

Awesome value indeed - it seems the only big differences are that it doesn't recharge itself and there is no remote - whether or not you paid the extra for the slightly more aesthetically pleasing Roomba would depend on both your budget and how much you wanted to show off to your mates at what your new device can do!! smile

Hey there Marshall

Yeah exciting isn't it?? No idea how efficient it would be tbh so it might not solve all your problems lol but i am just excited at the prospect of it all tbh - and the people who post on the iRobot users forum do seem quite taken with it don't they? It does seem to do what it says on the tin! Shoot the Yanks are sooo ahead on this one. I mean the idea of programming your roomba to do its stuff while you are out - that is pretty cool! Tho i would prolly want to watch it tbh!! I will take the risk of the Asimovian aspects - change and progress come with attendant risks! From my pov anyways i would treat my Roomba well and therefore doubt if i would be turned upon!! tongue

LW: I'm going to get an army of them!

(My cats might then rebel against me - they hate hoovers)

An army of them would be soooo cool - pricey but cool!! Still i expect they will be able to self-replicate one day! wink

Would love to see a major scrap of robot vacs v. cats - only a matter of time before there is a youtube vid of it!! Posted by your good self prolly! tongue

Know what you mean about cats - don't have one atm sadly, but man do they resent the hoover!! As soon as it is switched on they bolt, retreat then glare at you from a distance. Their baleful stare says " Wtf - disturbing my peace??? "

It's a bit unfair on their part tho cos they are forever cleaning themselves so we humans have a right to keep ourselves and our environment clean also!! It is all one way with them!! angry wink

God yeah i had forgotten that!! lol grin

Cats make you sneeze - dogs don't!!

So you are afraid of snakes but they don't make you allergic.
You are not afraid of cats but they do cause you to suffer.

Soo..which animal would you rather be stuck in a room with??

Also if you got a Roomba and kept it working incessantly it would help around the cat hair thing - however your Roomba would begin to resent your exploitation and rise up against you so it seems you just can't win! wink

not just that but cats aren't real pets, they are mercenaries, dogs are real pets. Cats are the ideal 'pet' for the kind of folk who have kids and then ship them off to boarding school.

cat people are cunts.

ORLY?? Even this cat person????? wink

17 September, 2007 - 23:54

yeah but most cat people arne;t liek that are they, they are sad fuckers who let themselves be used by the mercenary lil bastads. Dogs are where it's at, they have loyalty.

17 September, 2007 - 23:55

just think about it, how many homeless people do you see with cats and how many do you see with dogs? Cat's don't give a fuck about you once you're down on your luck, a dog will starve by your side.

18 September, 2007 - 00:07

The cat considers it own needs without question at all times and will do what is necessary - dogs offer loyalty and solidarity!! Both animals have revolutionary potential!! wink

And there are people - like rkn - who share their accom with both a cat and a dog - these are the happiest people i find!! tongue

18 September, 2007 - 00:10

fuck that, grow some balls and pick a side!!!

I don't need the distraction of balls with these breasts to take care of y'know! wink

OK then i pick the side that is in opposition to you - i will choose to bat for the cat team black bloc
Cry havoc and let slip the cats of war!!! wink
Know i will have Jef on my side and Grace i think - can't remember about t'others OOTH.

18 September, 2007 - 00:44

it is something to fight as a mercenary it is quite another to fight for them.....

is it fuck, it's one of the truest things i've ever said. When was the last time you saw a homeless guy with a fucking cat?

18 September, 2007 - 03:00

No seriously, you're doing one of your irony things yeah? You don't really mean that do you? Or should i start a thread on how dogs are lifestylist cos crusties don't take cats to squats?

18 September, 2007 - 03:02

Well Alan if even fucking crusties understand that dogs are better than shitty cats shouldn't that tell you something.

18 September, 2007 - 03:16

Well that argument doesn't stand up to much. Replace "dogs" with "Rudimentary Peni" and "shitty cats" with oooh, I dunno, whatever you think is hot right now.

18 September, 2007 - 03:20

but dogs are just a tad more universal than "Rudimentary Peni", I mean most crusties sleep under a roof too.

18 September, 2007 - 03:24

Japanese Akita for teh win!

18 September, 2007 - 03:35

So wait, your argument's predicated on an assumption that more crusties like dogs than Rudimentary Peni? I want evidence of this. Perhaps Conor has a graph for us.

18 September, 2007 - 03:39

no my argument is that dogs are so great that even stupid crusties can appreciate them, and following on from that, people who prefer cats are even more retarded, evil, weird, anti social, and smelly than crusties.

Triple Chow Chow Combo!!!!
