Television evangelist Falwell dies at 73

LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Rev. Jerry Falwell, the television evangelist who founded the Moral Majority and used it to mold the religious right into a political force, died Tuesday shortly after being found unconscious in his office at Liberty University. He was 73.

I know it's just another fascist asshole dying, and that there are plenty more out there, but this feels real good. The only thing that I would have liked is for him to have needed a blood transfusion from a homosexual, so he could think about that for a second.

I'm so upset that he didn't suffer at all, considering all of the suffering he did in beholden to US capital. He created a movement that continues to this day as the major repressive arm of US fascism at home. Fuck this motherfucker.

I want to piss on his grave, maybe I'll swing through Lynchburg this summer.

Am I the only person who finds the name 'Lynchburg' funny?

Am I the only person who finds the name 'Lynchburg' funny? Please tell me this place isn't named after a famous lynching or series of lynchings.

Its named after a family of anti-slavery quakers actually.

were they anti-slavery because they thought all slaves should be lynched?

The Lynch's set up the first meeting house in what would eventually become Lynchburg in the 1780s. Around 1820 or 1830 most of the Quakers left the area mostly because of their opposition to slavery.

The Quakers were an extemely positive social force in the south and were a key factor in the underground railroad.

I loved this, from the BBC News website:

Quote:
President Bush said both he and his wife, Laura, were "deeply saddened" by Mr Falwell's death.

"He taught young people to remain true to their convictions and rely upon God's word throughout each stage of their lives," Mr Bush said.

eek

I discovered that Falwell's "auto"biography was written by a gay bloke. You couldn't make this shit up. It reminds me of that story about the BNP hiring a black DJ for their Christmas party. Apparently, "he didn't sound black on the phone". laugh out loud

Whether or not you like Christopher Hitchens, this is pretty funny
"If you gave Falwell an enema, he could be buried in a matchbox."
